Or Johan cruyff ?

He didn’t manage in England. Though he is one of the greatest figure in football of all time. Those of those old enough to see him playing were privileged. He then went on to change management.

(He is described on wikipedia as a forward/attacking midfielder BTW).

Brian clough

So, that is 2 in England. The OP who made the point about midfielders making the best managers in general was correct. Though it should always be remembered Terry Dolan was a midfielder <laugh> Hateley, on the other hand was a forward.

So what I’ve learned:

Good managers have to have had a playing career as either a defender, midfielder or forward.

Fair enough.

****s up the career progression of goalkeepers though.

Never heard of Raymond Goethals? Dino Zoff did not do too bad. Dave Beasant was a goalkeeper.

next round is played on weekend of 27th Jan which is when we play Southampton away - as Southampton won their tie our league match will now be played mid week

I think any manager if he was a defender should have coaches that look after both the midfield and forward players, talking to Chris Chilton years ago, he said when he took over City that he had to physically push Whitehurst into positions to receive corners and free kicks in training because he had no clue.
Looking at Billy Sharp was like a breath of fresh air because straight away you could see he knew exactly where to stand where to run.

Perhaps we should offer Billy Sharp position of Attacking coach when he retires.
