Before now, we usually top of the 'fair play league'. This season alone, we had so many red cards, more than any we had in previous five years in the league. We were lucky yesterday during Merseyside Derby Ibrahima Konate was not sent off. What is happening to us? !!!
if you think it's anything other than refs being dickheads you need to give your head a wobble. macallister rescinded vvd was dickhead ref. jones marginal and var influenced with worst still possible angle jota didn't even touch the guy konate foul was fair but the second was marginal contact middle of the park that if you got a yellow for you'd be livid. refs are utter inconsistent
If young hadn't got a second yellow, the konate descion wouldn't be a big thing. It was marginal, but generally refs keep their hands out of their pockets for that sort of challenge for a second yellow. In saying that, if the last few weeks had gone differently I don't think young would have got a second yellow either. I think the refs are tying themselves in knots now trying to look fair handed.
Referees are being cautious because of recent injustices to Liverpool: they are afraid of getting it wrong again !.
The young and Konate ones aren’t even comparable tbh. Young slide in from behind and took diaz out as he was about to enter the box. I think the one is the tarkowski yellow for a similar pull back on half way line. The only thing I can think that saved Konate was the Everton player wasn’t getting anywhere close to the ball so wasn’t stopping a counter and it was classed as just a coming together. When you see it, the ball is already with vvd by time Everton player hits the ground.
Eight people have been arrested after Saturday's Merseyside derby, where a female fan and a police officer were hit by bottles. The officer suffered a laceration to his face and was treated at Anfield stadium after the attack at about 11:50 BST, Merseyside Police said. Eight people were held on suspicion of various offences, including hate and tragedy chanting, and ticket touting. Police described the behaviour as "totally unacceptable". Ch Insp Iain Wyke said: "The police officer was at the ground to ensure that all match-goers were able to enjoy the game safely, so to be assaulted in such a manner when he was simply doing his job is shocking. "I know most football fans would rightly be appalled by this and I would encourage anyone who witnessed the incidents to contact us." Details about the female fan's condition have not been revealed. The force said it would liaise with Liverpool and Everton to identify the people responsible for throwing bottles. Liverpool won the game 2-0 after Mohamed Salah scored a second-half double. The number of arrests at football matches in England and Wales has reached a nine-year high, according to recent government data. There were 2,264 football-related arrests during 2022-23, the highest number since 2013-14 and an increase of 66 on the previous season.
I didnt say they where comparable. More, if we hadn't had so many reds given against us in the past few games, the ref would have used a bit more discretion, boos would have rang out, but he'd have got a final warning rather than a second yellow. Nobody would have thought twice. It would of been in the refs mind, theyve had players sent off for less, I've got to give it.
Don’t think so. Young made 2 yellow card tackles. One a cynical foul to stop a counter and the second a sliding tackle from behind to stop player getting into box.
Let's forget personalities and just look at the job of officials for a moment. I said yesterday I thought Young's second yellow was harsh and I stand by that. There are some on here adamant that it was just. So whatever the ref decides some of us will disagree, and we're all on the same side - imagine when you bring different partisan viewpoints into play. I agree that refs are inconsistent, but then so are we.
Virgil van Dijk admits Liverpool rode their luck in Saturday's Merseyside derby, revealing even Ibrahima Konate believed he was fortunate to avoid a red card against Everton. Virgil van Dijk reveals what Ibrahima Konate really thought about Liverpool red card controversy - Liverpool Echo
I know you're joking, but that's sort of my point. What one ref thinks is a yellow card another might not - just like us, and just like us they'll think the other is wrong.
Joking In some circumstances yeah, just don't see how a tackle from behind that gets the man and doesn't make contact with the ball can be anything other then a booking.
But your opinion is not the objective truth - neither is mine. Notice I'm not saying the ref was wrong, just that another ref (or the same one on another day) might have decided differently. I accept the second yellow, but I've had accepted a decision just to give a free kick. If any of us expect all decisions to align with our own, and believe any that don't are objectively wrong, then we're just setting ourselves up to be disappointed. This is football, and as long as the game is played by and judged by human beings these things are going to happen.
I honestly have no real worries over discipline. Many have been unjustified. Much more of a worry is our deficiencies in defence that are often causing the "contentious" fouls in the first place.
jota would never have been sent off had joe gomez not sprinted forward past him on a run to nowhere when we were down to 10 and left jota with no pass to make with a man on his back. That was brainless and put us down to 9. yeah he shouldn't attempt the tackle but he's desperate. VVD was lazy getting into good position and kicked through. no real complaints Jones was a nothing attempt to play the ball that he got wrong. Macallister was an attempt to win a 50/50 breaking off a corner. it was a shocker of a card given if their player has got there he' have clogged macallister. it was just luck of the draw who got who. I don't mind a good solid pro foul at all. If refs are going to actually give yellows for them then give them ALL THE TIME (ahem city) the ref gave both on saturday. I just feel this system is ridiculous and lazy and needs to reset. I was actually happier with trent going RCB and Konate RB to spread play so trent could lump it at nunez and salah but this indulgent standing in the centre like a cm not moving effort is not for me. he did the same v everton and it just doesn't work. not one iota. There's a bit of work to do to pick up the urgency and getting good shape imo. thats most of what is wrong. (which isn't massive but if we actually want to win something we need to improve it)
The hardest thing for referees to judge is intent, which is almost impossible. That's were the subjectivity can come in. I agree with Z that you gave a poor example in Young's second challenge because totally missing the ball and getting the man is an objective not subjective decision and an easy call. As it was a second yellow and therefore a red, VAR will likely have checked it too. With regard to our disciplinary record so far, I don't think we've changed how we play, I think the referees are being over zealous. When you consider that the two main culprits who like to fly in with an ambitious tackle (Fabinho and Thiago) haven't played for us this season, it's more evidence that what has changed is the refereeing style.
Is it always a yellow? Always? The only claim you can make about it being objective is that it is clearly a foul. Whether or not it's worth a card is subjective, proven by the fact that I and several others have a different opinion to yours. Or are you suggesting that my opinion is invalid? Everyone seems to be missing my point. I said it was harsh, not that it was wrong, and I had no desire to make a big deal out of it, but I wanted to use it as an example of how inconsistent we as fans can be, so it's not a hanging offence for officials to be similarly inconsistent. I'm not disputing that the standard of refs is poor, just saying that even if it was a lot higher we would still have people disagreeing over anything where disagreement is possible. Too often imo, "refs being consistent" translates to "refs doing what I think they should". Patterson's effort on Diaz in the box could easily have been deemed a penalty, imo - and we didn't get anything.
