    Sorry, I missed out on this - so, presuming it was Miss Pakistan who was the offending article. How many bishops can you have on a chess board without them attacking each other ?

    Presuming that nothing else is on the board.

    ??
    I've always assumed that I can only have two - and they can't attack each other because a) they're on the same side and b) one moves on black squares and the other on white.<confused>

    This presumes that the board is empty of everything apart from bishops BB. Actually even in a real life game of chess more than 4 are possible because every pawn can be promoted to either a Queen, Rook, Knight or Bishop (though in most cases a queen would be chosen.

    OK. I can see this one is blocking the thread. The answer is 14 ie. 8 on row 1 and 6 on row 8 thereby using the 7 diagonals in both directions.
    Another sillier one: If you dig a hole starting in Wellington New Zealand going directly through the centre of the Earth which country would you end up in ?

    Cheers cologne.

    A football question - which former Premier League player started and finished his career at a foodstuff?

    Good tries, but no.
    He started and ended at the same foodstuff.
    The name of the foodstuff is the club's name, not its nickname.
    The club in question is non-League.

    One of the four options you gave actually is one of the EPL clubs he played for.

    The question asked for the name of the player, not the club he played for.

    One of those is the right club though...

    On reflection it's not Chard - nobody from there has ever got further than Bristol or Swindon. so i'll go for Quorn FC (not quite certain what Quorn is but know it's a club in Leicestershire). In which case Luke Varney ?

    That's the one. A bit of a journeyman really - he had 18 spells at 11 different clubs, not counting the two he had at Quorn, and at least 2 of those were million pound transfers. The highlight of his career was scoring the winner for Blackpool at Anfield during their only season in the EPL.

    Back to you.

    Cheers BB.

    As we know the English language has borrowed words from many languages - nearly a hundred in all. From this language we get a word for something which children often like to suck. Also another word for the dominant life form in Luton ! One further word by a good mate of mine. To help a little here is an example of a conversation.

    How are you ? = Shushin ?
    I am very well = Mandi adusta Kushti
    Yes, I'm fine to = Owli, mandi kushti
    Where are you from ? = Katar kai tutti jells ?
    ??????????? = Mandi poshrat
    what's your name = So tutti's nav ?
    My name's Maria = Mandi's nav Maria.

    Further translations to help
    Man = Mush
    Bread = Padda or Panam
    Which language is/was this ?

    That’s easy. Kushti is well known as a word from the Peckham dialect ( see Only fools and horses). So ignoring all the blind alleys, it’s BBC English

    Sorry it's taken so long BB. Had to go out for a while. You're more or less there, it is Anglo Romani (in comparison to European Romani languages). Not much spoken these days - tends to now be more Para-Romani which has only about 50% Romani words and largely Anglicized grammar. The words which came from the Romani language were Lollipop (Lollipobbul) Pal (we use it for a mate but the Romani word is for a brother), and the last clue was Chav (Romani for a child but taken over in slang English for a rough unruly youth). Hence the dominant species in Luton (Homo Erectus Innitus - the common Chav). Over to you !
