I don't know how much ref's get paid, but when you think how much money there is in football to entice more ex-players to take up refereeing, if they paid a good salary to officials maybe more players would take up the profession. Having played the game a bit, you can see for example when a player trying to con the ref, which the present officials seem to not spot.

quickest descents through the english football leagues
3 bristol city relegated from div 1 in 1980, div 2 in 1981, div 3 into div 4 1982.
3 wolverhampton wanderers from div 1 in 1984, div 2 in 1985, div 3 into div 4 1986 (where they acquired steve bull and were promoted in 1988, 1989, and 2003).
and, a little differently:
3 luton town from championship in 2007, league 1 in 2008, league 2 into whatever division 5 was called back then.
two german clubs and a portuguese one suffered four consecutive relegations. several clubs (see link at the end) were promoted five seasons consecutively.
a german club and a cypriot club changed divisions in ten consecutive seasons. that's some yoyoing. the english record is six by rotherham who went from the championship to league one and back, changing in 2017/18/19/20/21/22 and it looks like they're after adding 2024 to the list. fulham swapped five times during rotherham's latter five.

cheltenham are playing their eighth league game of the season this evening. their current league goal tally for the season is none. today's game got off to an unhelpful start when one of their players was sent off after 5 minutes
I remember Northampton Town going all the way up from the 4th div to 1st div in consecutive seasons, and then back down again, but spending 2 seasons in Div 3 on the way down.
Obviously this was before the Premier League era.
Same here. So did candw as those were the times when he was of an age to be going to every game.Having a drink played a big part in it as well.

i think they may have had the fore-runner(s) of our players that played in all four divisions while ascending up the league. division 4 only appeared in the late 50s, so little chance of it happening before then.

Former Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp has scored his first MLS hat-trick,
The 37-year-old striker helped LA Galaxy to a 4-3 win over Minnesota United.
Sharp has now scored six goals in six games since moving to the United States last month.
He was out of contract after leaving the Blades this summer, where he scored 129 goals in 377 appearances across three spells.

So here's another poser for you Manchester United fans...
The club spent £47.2m to sign Andre Onana, 27, from Inter Milan in the summer while letting long-serving keeper David de Gea, 32, leave when his contract expired.
Fair to say Onana hasn't had the best of starts at Old Trafford so should they have stuck with De Gea? Who would you rather have in goal right now?
Hit thumbs up for Onana, down for De Gea.
