Oh brilliant. Just bringing the subject up is going to do more harm than good. How do you control several thousand Northam End fans from making anti-gay chants. Isn't going to happen. Someone will start something, then the herd mentality will take over.

Tbh regarding the homophobic chanting, I think that it depends how bad the chanting is and what is said. Most of the chanting is a bit of light hearted banter and should be taken as such, however there are always going to be the same idiots who take it too far.
 
Personally i believe that whatever is said/chanted at opposing fans during the match can simply be forgotten with a handshake at the end.

But be sure to wash your hands afterwards :-)

It's exactly these kind of ignorant bigotry comments that breed the homophobic chanting in the first place
 
I would pay money to see the court case of a bloke accused of singing "we can see you holding hands". Good luck with securing a guilty verdict on that one....

This is just the police justifying spending more of the public revenue. Instead of wasting time and money on nonsense like this, they should be out catching real villains.
 
Laughable.

What are the police going to do exactly to combat the voices of thousands of Saints fans. Arrest them all? What a waste of resources and time, which would be far better spent focusing on real issues.

A group of football fans chant "we can see you holding hands" - what do the police do about that? For one, the Brighton fans most probably aren't all holding hands in a homosexual manner, and two - are the crowd actually inferring that they hate the Brighton fans for being homesexual (although most won't be)? The answer to the latter question is most probably no.

It's a foolish and complicated step for the OB to take - trying to tackle what is essentially football banter - as surely then every football fan would have to be arrested for conspiracy to get their father's gun in order to shoot the Pompey "scum" with. To me that is far more provocative.

The point I'm making is that Police need to appear to make an effort to act more human. Common sense is in grave demand in the police force as a body.
 
The very lovely Mrs Godders and I always hold hands when watching the football. I also occasionally give her a little peck on the cheek (that is about all I am capable of these days).

No, i'm not taking the piss. I just live in the year 2011, where homosexuality is widely accepted and homophobia is bigotry, ignorant and rather outdated.

Gay jokes are far too old now, it's not the 1970s anymore. To be honest, i'll be ridiculing those that make homophobic comments and chants because their ignorance to modern society is very sad and rather amusing.
 
If you look at this another way, apparently 6% of the UK population is homosexual, so the chances are there are a few hundred or so Southampton fans at any home game who are gay.

If it's OK to possibly offend those Brighton fans who actually are gay, is it also OK to offend those Southampton fans who are gay?

And before you say "Oh, it's just light-hearted banter", just substitute a "light-hearted" racist remark for the light-hearted homophobic one, or maybe one making fun of disabled people. See how that sounds.

Just a thought...
 
<laugh> You could'nt make it up!! That's what Brighton is now known for, so it's meat and drink to opposition fans. They get it every week, so I can't really see it being a problem
