Summer window

I wasn’t born till ‘68 but I’d heard of him.
I’ve had many a game of golf with George Herd though, he’s a cracking bloke with loads of stories.
He only only stopped playing golf this year due to arthritis in his hands.

 

And still scored better than a goal every two games . Loved Nick Sharkey when I was a kid

I think you were right with Brian Usher Sandy, I remember he was one of the players that got stick from the crowd although it was mainly good humoured.
I have just looked at our teams for that season after Clough got injured, the only other name was Ambrose Fogarty but he wasn't blond haired.

 

Eventually, yes. But I’m sure a fair haired lad played c/f in the immediate aftermath? But I’m fast coming to realise that my memories could be a fairytale land of mists and shadows.

 

Thanks for that Monty! I was beginning to think my memory was existing in cloud-cuckoo land.

 

He was,he didn't replace Clough.I remember the crowd not liking him that much...he was a little bit timid...good right winger though,could go past his man and put a cross in. I think Neil Martin did,from Hibs,I think,then Nicky Sharkey played centre forward.

Usher was quick but often ran out of pitch and remember the crowd getting on his back for that a bit, but was a decent player.

 

George Herd was my Dad's favourite player...(after Shack).

 

I used to work with a lad called Brian Usher for British Coal, we both worked in the stores department. Brian went for an interview for promotion one day. In the stores department the same interview question always came up. Its Friday, its 16:30, an engineer , comes to the stores. the storekeeper has gone home, we need an emergency piece of equipment, what would you do? The expected answer is I would contact one of our suppliers for emergency delivery and would arrange for payment on Monday.

"Well Brian, what would you do?"

"Erm nothing, I get the bus home at 4 0 clock on a Friday" He didnt get the job, I also dont think he played for the lads

 

Mind you we didn't sign Usher until the season after Clough got injured so it may be that neither of our memories are as reliable as they once were

Jobe wins POTM award for August

Sunderland supporters have voted for Jobe as their Player of the Month for August, sponsored by Serios Group.

The 17-year-old started all four league games in his first month at the Club playing a prominent role in the side.

His most memorable outing was scoring twice in the Lads' 2-1 win against Rotherham United which handed Tony Mowbray's men their first victory of the Sky Bet Championship season.

The midfielder won over 43% of the votes, beating Dan Neil, Luke O'Nien and Patrick Roberts, who were also nominated for the award.

Congratulations, Jobe !

Jude Bellingham's Instagram reaction to brother Jobe's Sunderland award

August has been an excellent month for Bellingham brothers Jude and Jobe.

Jobe Bellingham has enjoyed a promising start to life at Sunderland.

The attacking midfielder has started each of the Black Cats opening five Championship games under head coach Tony Mowbray following his summer move from Birmingham City.

The 17-year-old England under-19s captain turned match-winner for Sunderland during the clash against Rotherham United at the Stadium of Light, netting two goals during the 2-1 win to hand the Black Cats their first three points of the season.

Jobe's good start to his time at the Stadium of Light earned the player Sunderland's Player of the Month award for August, with brother Jude Bellingham earning the same trinket in Spain for Real Madrid after his blistering start to his La Liga career.

Taking to Instagram, Jude posted a show of support for younger brother, Jobe, reposting Sunderland's announcement of the August Player of the Month award and adding three clapping emojis.

Speaking about having been deployed as a number nine by head coach Mowbray in recent games, Jobe stated: “Wherever he asks me to play I’m going to play so I don’t mind. I used to play there quite a lot as a kid, in fact all of the time to be honest.

“It’s a different challenge isn’t it. You have to adapt to the game and do whatever the game is asking you to do. That’s what the best teams do and I think that we did that and the best players do that.

“I thought that I did quite well, but we’ll see. I don’t really fancy playing regularly as a number nine.”

 

Sharkey was part of the 63/4 promotion side, Didn't Neil Martin come later than that?

Remember him scoring 2 headers up at Syd James's in a 3-0 win mid sixties?

 

George had his detractors but I liked him. In those days tackles went in fast and high and George was on the receiving end of many of them, so his answer was to jump in the air when one came in - the only player I remember doing that - although many a player went up in the air involuntarily!

 

I remember him scoring a goal in front of the Fulwell end, slipping the ball under the keeper and doing a summersault over the top him.

 

I remember Amby - The Lion Of Roker! Didn’t he play inside left then left back?

 

Now I’m really confused. Maybe the blond lad I’m thinking about wasn’t after Clough, but was used as a replacement for 3 games when Alan Brown dropped Clough. Not a popular move with the crowd and the blond lad suffered abuse from the crowd because of it. Even though the lad scored some goals.

 

I remember George herd slotting a nice goal past everton in the last minuet
1966 just a few weeks before everton won the cup,

 

I can't remember anything about him Sandy, I was only eight in 1962 though (that's my excuse)
