Machynlleth...thats where the little kid April Jones was murdered wasn't it. so sad

No my Dad was from Llanelli, my mum was from Tottenham area.

But you are right. It is not a strong genetic link but there is a genetic association. MS isn't directly inherited, but people who are related to someone with the condition are more likely to develop it, that is true. I am pretty sure it has skipped me...I am too old, so fingers crossed I have not passed the susceptibility onto my two girls.

Fingers crossed for your family t0o Goldie

Yes, you're right about Machynlleth, and incredibly sad about poor April Jones.

I've always believed that the more blood is mixed through generations by procreating with those living in far off districts or even different countries, the better. The fact that your Mum is English is healthy imo. I'm sure your girls will be fine. One day soon, they'll find a cure for the vile condition

Yes your example is stupid I agree. And yes, I still think your original post was elitist. You have the right to disagree

    Absolutely Goldie.
A real awful disease. I cannot really remember my mum being able to walk...

It was an awful degenerative existence, a lovely active mind trapped in a non functioning body.

I do hope a cure is found soon...but I've been saying that all my adult life

With respect Beth, St George wasn’t “Turkish”. He was Cappadocian Greek. Of course modern day Turkey didn’t exist at that time.

That is mighty nice of you Stainsey

I agree it was elitist...but I am not taking that as an insult.

I want the best footballers playing for my club
I want the best paramedics and doctors looking after my health.
I want the best builders building my house.
I want the best electricians wiring my house.
I want the best train drivers driving my trains.
I want the best scientists carrying out ground breaking research

How do we get these people...we get people who are adept in these skills and we train them to be the best they can.

I do not want my house built by someone who we give a chance to .

So sorry Stainsey... Google let me down ...please take it up with them and their misuse of the word Turkey

From google "George was actually born in Cappadocia, Turkey, around 270AD. St George "

Glad we finally agree that your original post was elitist. Wasn’t meant as an insult, just a point of fact.
Sadly by not giving an underprivileged child “a chance” to show what they can do, you might just miss out on finding the best doctor/paramedic/house builder for the job. Thus the elite continue to be the elite….while the rest get cast aside.
    A sorry state of affairs

Very interesting that Goldy as my Mrs has MS and has done for 18 years now. It's supposed to be worse in men. All her siblings have some form of neurological disorder which I used to joke that it was bad breeding. To me MS is an umbrella for numerous, different conditions. Too little is known about it and even consultants disagree over it. 100 years ago it was thought that it was blood flow related. I also happen to think that my wife's is all blood flow related. You can never get a blood sample from her, she has been prescribed blood thinners daily yet apparently this isn't related?!. The wisest consultant we ever saw said that they will never truly be able to diagnose until a post mortem.

I think you need to look into it more….Turkey didn’t exist in 270AD so I would have thought it would be difficult to be of that nation.

There are many different drugs used to combat symptoms of ms. All with side effects that need drugs of their own to combat. Long term research shows that not a single one is beneficial.

    No Stainsey...again.
Why not try and get an education system that actually educates people and also finds out what they are good at, what is their skill set is.

At the moment, our ethos is everyone must go to university and get a well paid job in a merchant bank.

How about finding out who wants to be a skilled artisan, who wants to care for the sick and old, who wants to be a farmer, who wants to sit in a small box and program a computer ( my husband).

My elite are the artisans of this world

Finally you post something I can agree with. Sadly underprivileged, those with low academic skills and those with learning difficulties are currently being left behind. Going back to the point of this conversation, it seems “Turing”, is at least trying to tip the balance away from the elite

Should it always be the best person for the job or should we have quotas

And this is where we started to disagree. I now understand why....a different definition of elite.

just looked it up again on Google...( my friend)... and something you disagree with often

elite:- select group that is superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group or society.

I want to promote the scientific elite, that's what Erasmus did, and what the Turing scheme doesn't as much

You get a someone to rewire your house Kiwi, who comes from a quota of people who want to give rewiring a house a go.

I will try and get an electrician who is the best I can get

But when those “qualities” that make someone “elite” are purely down to their social standing or how much money mummy and daddy earn.......in my eyes that’s morally wrong.

I don’t often disagree with google......just the websites you quote that are clearly incorrect, eg the St George one that you previously quoted

Shall we go with St George being citizen of Rome Stainsey, ..then everyone will be happy.

And exact races and nationalities are all nicely defined and compartmentalised

As long as it’s not factually incorrect, like your post saying he was “Turkish”.....I’d be happy with that

St George probably threw his passport in the sea and stayed in a four star spa at the expense of the local villagers.
