Who’s been pushed out? No one has been forcibly removed or stopped from doing anything.

There are plenty of migrants in Spain and a fair bit of racial tension at times but 99% of Spanish people get on with it and do most of the same **** their grandparents did.

We’ve had areas with high immigration for longer than you or I were around. You’re always going to have a small number of people full of resentment but I just don’t see it as being anywhere near as big an issue as much of our media would have us believe it is.

In certain Northern towns, Muslims will only sell to Muslims. It's how they create their unadulterated communities.

Please show me when we had high immigration before we were born, that compares with anything we've had in the last 50 years

I didn’t say it compares with the last 50 years but new ethnic groups generally will stick together for some time. The Jews did when they first arrived in big numbers and there was plenty of right wing vitriol about accepting them in the 40s too even in relatively small numbers.

I’ll have to take your word for it. Having been to probably every town/city among those with the highest % of Muslims in England I’m yet to find a business unwilling to take my money.

Sorry you have missed the point. The Erasmus scheme was based on the quality of the research and its potential to produce beneficial scientific outcome, by putting outstanding scientists in outstanding places ( other schemes like the Rhodes scholars...did it too in other parts of the world).

Although brilliant it was not designed to give disadvantaged kids a chance to go to India or Africa.

And before anyone starts on that front..
I was part of a Wellcome Trust program that took outstanding young medics from Eatern Africa and the far East and gave them opportunities to study at the best laboratories in Europe.

The Turing scheme is a poor cousin as it has no access to the outstanding French, German, Italian and Dutch laboratories.

It is not attracting top students...who in the case of my area of work...are wandering of to the States and Canada for collaborations and permanent post.

Our scholarships are now being filled with rich Chinese and Indian students who can afford our fees out of their own pockets...some are good, but many are not that good.

Sad times
Your post sounds rather elitist to me……unsurprising to be honest.

Not totally relevant but I think if there were more emphasis on languages in state schools there’d be far more demand for these things among working class kids. I was lucky my first Spanish teacher was great so even though the rest were **** it was one of the few subjects I cared about. Languages are still seen as a lesser degree choice at many unis and industries.

Totally agree.

You're right about extreme Right Wing when Jewish people came here over the ages, but they've never come in huge numbers like immigration now, and as you say, there was outright racism at times, including Mosley's Blackshirts. Integration is everything. Integration of different cultures as well as people.

You didn't answer my question about whether you still keep Jewish traditions - because if you do (and I hope you do), it would be hypocritical to claim the British people have no culture to preserve

No I don’t think I do. I don’t do the festivals, don’t keep Shabbat, don’t keep kosher, don’t support Spurs, date a non-jew and I’m not a member of a synagogue. I don’t mind being jewish as it’s not like I have a choice but don’t think it impacts my life positively or negatively.

I did ask what British culture we aren’t keeping alive. Nobody is being stopped from doing anything. Culture evolves over time. If people aren’t doing whatever customs they were that’s their own choice surely.

Thanks for you interest, but I feel it's my duty to stay here and continue the struggle. It's important to tell people with nasty views that they really are nasty. My close friends would admit that I've been influential in tempering some of their more unpleasant attitudes.

It really isn't your duty.
Just move to a country that you don't so vehemently dislike.
Why have rows every time you meet up with your friends who happen to have a different world view to you?
Anyone would think that you like arguing........;)

Those sound like justifications for racism.

Touching that you and Col want me to be happier, but I'm quite content here thank you very much.

<laugh><laugh>
You'd find racism in an empty room.
You never sound content.
How can you enjoy living in a country you dispise, among people you constantly disagree with?

I don't have rows, I have disagreements. And it's not every time we meet up, I exaggerated that. I wouldn't say I liked arguing, but if someone says something I disagree with, I will tell them. There's no animosity.

Elitist, or trying to get the best person for the job.

So do you want Lydon dykes and/ or Sinclair Armstrong to play in front for Rangers ( it might cost you 10or 29k a week.

Or do you want me ( I am underprivileged as I never had proper football training at school and discriminated against, as I am not allowed by gender to play in the EFL).

Yes a stupid example...but that is the crux.

Do you want to get the best person for the job...or do you want to " give someone a chance".

I did not come from a privilege background..my father worked in a factory, my mother had MS and couldn't work. . So please don't give me that elitism crap...it won't work on me

We arent keeping alive...the " blackface" Morris dancers ...they are nearly all gone now.

Even mummers are watering down Good St George killing the saracen ( yes I know George was Turkish...but that doesn't affect a good mummers story).

Both of these are British culture that go back centuries...
