I was talking about his England performances, which for me are always disappointing. Plenty of players (like Gerard and Lampard) have great club stats but can't do it when they pull the national shirt on
Lampard and Gerrard were no good for England? Lampard's in the top ten all time England goal scorers, despite not being a striker and Gerrard's at number 21, both make pretty much every top 25 England players of all time list. If Mount gets anywhere near Lampard and Gerrard, then Southgate will have been proven absolutely right.
I'm not saying Lampard and Gerrard were "No Good for England" but they didn't do it when it mattered. For the so called "Golden Generation of Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes, Joe Cole, Rooney, etc. to never get beyond the QF of a major tournament was a serious let down. It's all well and good hammering minnows or winning meaningless friendlies but can you do it when it really counts? You just admitted Mount hasn't replicated his club form for England and that's what I'm getting at. How many chances do you keep giving him when he isn't performing well? He won't get anywhere near Lampard and Gerrard IMHO
England squad for the games against Scotland and Ukraine: Goalkeepers: Sam Johnstone (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal) Defenders: Ben Chilwell (Chelsea), Levi Colwill (Chelsea), Lewis Dunk (Brighton & Hove Albion), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Fikayo Tomori (AC Milan), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle United), Kyle Walker (Manchester City) Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Jordan Henderson (Al-Ettifaq), Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City), Declan Rice (Arsenal) Forwards: Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), James Maddison (Tottenham), Eddie Nketiah (Arsenal), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Callum Wilson (Newcastle United)
Looks about right to me. Some reliable players to get the point against Ukraine that pretty much sees us qualify for the Euros and withstand a volatile Hampden crowd. I'm slightly surprised to see Henderson there, but maybe Southgate wants to see what his club training level is like? Sterling, Ward-Prowse and Bowen can consider themselves unlucky but there's players in there that deserve a chance if we can give them it like Colwill and Nketiah.
It's totally based on their past performances. Think I heard Southgate say (admittedly some time ago) that he knew which players he could trust in tournament situations and that it would be difficult for many players to break into the squad
I listened to a pundit on 5 Live, I think it might have been Tim Vickery. He made a really good point that international managers only get a few weeks a year to work with their squad. He said most international managers don't completely disregard form, but what is more important is getting a team on the pitch that works and understands each other. I mean, its a fair point. The international game is so different too. Aside from Maguire, only Tomori has experience of European football. Do we really want a squad full of players that aren't really used to games outside of the Premier League? I think Phillips is more of a question mark considering what else is available in the squad, but if Rice is injured you are relying on Henderson. I can understand why both are there.
How’s Danny Loader (or Namaso as he suddenly started referring to himself as once he left Reading) getting on at Porto?
Namaso is at Porto. He rarely starts a game but get 15, 20 minutes specially if the result isn't going their way. Maybe he will get more time if Taremi goes to Milan but i don't rate him highly.
Just watching Hammers v Luton... can someone explain to me why Bowen isn't in this squad.... AGAIN!!!
Well for one thing his performance today can't be reflected in a squad selection made yesterday. Bowen has had a callup, it didn't go very well and other good players took their chance ahead of him. He might get in again at some point but he'll have to be patient. You can't squeeze every player who ever has a decent game at club level into the England squad.
