Theres an extent to which I agree with that, largely due to some poor efforts remaking Japanese horror badly, but the The Departed is anything but ****ed up. I agree that it would be great if everyone had the patience to watch foreign cinema, but I have no major issue whatsoever if something as good as The Departed can bring a great film to a wider audience. Plus we'd have no Magnificent Seven, and that would just be wrong.

I accept that my views on foreign remakes are a bit fanatical Colly, but for every Magnificent Seven (or indeed A Bugs Life which is another version of the same Seven Samurai storyline) there are loads of films that are ruined during conversion. Not because of translation but because hollywood treats us like idiots and dumbs them down. Despite my attack on The Departed I agree that it is a pretty good film, but if you are a fan of the original Infernal Affairs it is dire in comparison. I do take your point though about the importance of bringing world cinema to a wider audience due to many people being reluctant to watch subtitled films.

American History X is a great film. But i can't help wandering what Tony Kaye's version would have been like. You probably know that he tried to get an Alan Smithee on the final cut because he said he had no control over it. Hope we get to see a true directors cut someday.

I used to love Kung Fu Hustle, but my main project for 2nd year was this group of four modules revolving around sound for film, we choose Kung Fu Hustle and had to recreate every single pieces of sound - be it Foley, ADR, Sound FX and the like (albeit in our own style - you couldn't just copy, even had to learn a little bit of eastern music styles and a couple of their weird and wonderful instruments for the background music in certain scenes).
Totally ruined the film for me and I can't watch it now without being annoyed.

I love snatch

but getting back on topic

Man on Fire
Dead Man's Shoes
Casino
Anchorman
Annie Hall

I could go on . . .

Battle Beyond The Stars!? - George Peppard (Hannibal Hayes from the A-Team) as a space cowboy, Napolean Solo, John Boy Walton and some bird with big tits! How can you possibly that was worse than the original Seven Samurai!?
