Tbf Simms and Diallo were untested youngsters at this point last year.

It'll tell us a lot about how the recruitment process is working - it should improve year on year. These new lads look about a foot taller and wider than who we were getting last year.

My secret source has revealed that we're trialling a young French forward called Darnell Bile, recently released from St Etienne due to disciplinary reasons.

 

I think this is a big season in terms of assessing whether using foreign markets on unknown prospects is going to work. all our recent successes -Clarke, alese, cirkin, Hume, ballard - have all come from a British academy or team. The likes of bennette, lhidj and Ba are the ones who haven't really cut it and look some way off still. They've had a year now and will be interesting to see if they kick on or whether it will be another season. They look miles off being regular first team players to me. They can make an impact from.bench or odd game but aren't nearly good enough to be regular starters. Same with the young uns signed in summer.

Bennette and Ba are 19 and 20 respectively, they're obviously still a long way off being the finished articles and still have a long time left on their deals. I think the challenge for youngsters like this to try and improve faster than the club can progress, in order to earn a place in the team.

 

I think the fact we reached the play offs with the lowest points tally ever for the championship and Luton being promoted shows it was a weak division last year. I’m sure both Boro and Coventry were in the bottom 3/4 for months too, as were WBA so it’s not like it was because the league was so competitive there were just a lot of poor teams imo.

I think the size of the clubs who’ve came down this season compared to before is also a factor. The only club who came down and reinvested (Burnley) romped the league - all they had to spend to do so was about £40m which was 2 player sales. Leicester and Southampton both have players to sell and money to reinvest, plus wage bills that can attract players who are probably too good for this level.

 

This is how I see it as well.

If we can replicate a 6th place finish this season we'd be excelling in my opinion. Most fans wont see it like that though.

I was at the match last night, my dad watched it on tv and says the stream quality was rubbish.

we gave away sloppy goals and then struggled to turn the tempo up with a defensive formation and no strikers.

It’s only pre-season but I came away thinking it’s gonna be a long hard season if we don’t sign another striker. Every time Hemir goes into a 50/50 we will be wincing.

we seemed to start in a 5-3-2 with Ba and Bennette up top but we couldn’t move the ball from our third to the final 3rd. I reckon Mowbray wanted to test that system as a plan B and the first glance of it didn’t work. Still, that is exactly what pre-season is for and all that matters is that we start actual season well.
