I think the squad being the "long term plan" is some fans completely misinterpreting what they're saying.
DPP said this when the takeover was even being discussed, he might not remember, but essentially said we are 12th (at the time) it won't take that long to break into the top 6. It didn't, he was right.
But, the "long term plan" was likely in regards to the facilities at Newcastle, the area around the stadium, the financial side, the youth development, no boardroom.
These things take much, much longer than taking a 12th place squad and making it a 6th place squad.
Newcastle will go backwards to forwards I can't see then finishing top 4 again. I think they're set up nicely for an early struggle.

My feeling is that we'll be in the bottom three after the first few games.
I suppose they could win a couple of the 1st 3 but if they lose the 1st 3 they'll be in bother when they go to Brighton.

I think confidence goes along way if you lose 3 games and are then going away to Brighton you're in bother... ie not a good place.
