Not that I’m saying we need more CB’s but why wasn’t Anderson/Johnson used against Luton instead of a back 3 that had Gooch in it?

Nobody is making a case that gooch would be more effective in any way shape or form that game than a natural defender who’s 6 inches taller than him and can actually win an aerial duel.

That's Mowbray call, and he obviously thought/thinks they are not ready. (It worked for the home leg).

That's why its likely they'll both be sent out on loan to L1 to get needed game time. Imo.

Batth, Ballard, alese, selt, Aussie lad + O9 will be our choice CB this season. Hopefully gooch can stay at wing back.

It didn’t work in the home leg though, we conceded a poor goal which essentially gave us more to do in the away leg.

Like has been said though, not many teams at any level cope with losing their first choice CB pairing, especially given that ours was uk there with any in the division.

All about getting the right player(s) in rather than just anyone. Weve signed 1 striker already n going by all the rumours weve had plenty of bids in for others. We still have almost 1.5 months till the window closes to bring in 1 or 2 strikers
I’m not a fan of the window closing after the season starts. If it has to close, I prefer when it closes before the first game, so we know our settled squad.

In some previous seasons we almost wrote off the first few games, knowing we needed players in but waiting until the last minute, (not our fault necessarily). Then the last month of the season, we are desperate for points and every game is a cup final.

The away leg was always going to be a much different game though, scrappy and direct due to the narrowness of their pitch.

Even Ekwah has played at CB previously for West Ham, surely that was an option with Michut in midfield. Just seemed like we knew what was coming and accepted our fate. But hindsight is a wonderful thing I suppose.

Anyway, the point I’m making is it’s alright having 6 CB’s in the squad but if you’re not willing to use 2 of them even when you have a depleted squad then you don’t really have 6.

Well... Mowbray made that case and I think he probably knows a fair bit more about football than you or any of us on here, no offense like :emoticon-0102-bigsm.

They clearly weren't ready for Championship football and Mowbray thought Gooch could offer us more for the game as a whole. I'm going to trust his judgement...

I think in this case it’s what was better for the club and players in the long run. Putting Anderson and Johnson in as a brand new centre back pairing and then getting torn apart by a big, physical and well drilled Luton front line could set them back so far in their development. The focus is no longer game to game, the longer term strategy is now a big part of selection.

Oh 100%, I’m not saying I know more and it’s easy to speak after the result and say what you could’ve done.. I’m just stating that we don’t have as many CB’s as people are making out if we aren’t willing to play them over Gooch..

The whole being ready for the Prem thing is nonsense. In no situation are we any better from spending longer in the championship, people who think we are must be kidding themselves.

The astronomical amount of money we’d get from going up means it’s better to go up and come straight back down then reinvest again than linger in the championship worrying about someone like Stoke poaching your main striker because they’re offering a few quid more.

Being pushed to the back of the queue at centre back behind a 5’7 winger will do their confidence wonders :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Can I just politely ask that if people are saying that somebody over the road has said something, they at least say who it was. Its hard enough to follow this thread and forum without having to go and check another one to try and find something on there.

I'd rather not know what was happening on RTG than half know, if that makes sense?

Also where possible it would be great if people could avoid posts like "hes saying its on" or "he's not coming anymore". When a thread is about the entire transfer window its becoming really difficult to know who "he" is.

So saying something like "BronzeBummer is saying Cannon is due up this weekend" is so much more followable than somebody saying "somebody OTR says he's due up this weekend"

Anyway rant over. Sorry to moan and I know nobody needs to care what I think on this :D

That’s where the coach comes in to make a judgement based on what he knows of the players physical and mental state. One thing to screw up with a dodgy pass and get thrown in starting line up the next week I.e. Ekwah who has flourished. Another to screw up in last game of season and be left to stew on it over the summer when little support is available. For me, I trust Mowbray’s judgement.

Definitely agree with the bit in bold. Similarly, people are saying we're well stocked at CB for this coming season because of Seelt and Triantis, but does anyone know if either of them are ready for the Championship? They might be, but they have very limited experience so far. If Mowbray thinks they're ready, great. But if they're behind Gooch in the pecking order they may as well not be in the squad at all, imo...
