Sounds like Newcastle were gazumped late on this one ... Liverpool just piled in offered the release clause.

Newcastle had no chance anyway because even if they offered it the player wanted Liverpool which is just a cold hard truth.

Sounds like we were waiting, hoping that no one would trigger the clause, allowing us to attempt to haggle the price down to around £50million later in the window. Likely never considered spending £60m on him - that's supposedly the same fee that they were quoted for Diaby before walking.

It will certainly be a challenge, as it was this year. It's a challenge that we can smash through though, if things go well. Helps to remember that our top four form didn't only exist last season whilst Liverpool etc had bad years. We did it for the final six months of the preceding season too.

Getting ourselves into one European comp would be the bare minimum the Saudis will accept I suspect.
