So what about the 1975 refendum to remain which 64% said yes. Was that not final/definitive/sacrosanct?

I've asked that question previously and was totally ignored, good luck.

It's strange that we financed a tunnel, to link us to Europe, which was hailed as an historic event ...

... then left Europe and made it more difficult to travel and encourage the tourism that gives us a huge income.

The French, in my experience, were always enthralled by our Monarchy but that love has waned since Brexit imo.

The full effects of leaving Europe will take years to be realised, also just my opinion.

it should have been but i also would have to add that it was still the 'common market' which at the time was of great benefit to our industries.

once that woman was elected most of those industries were shut down/moved to another country/priced out because of cheaper imports/loss of the british standards kite mark (which allowed imports we would never have accepted)...40 years was a long time and much has changed and i was quite surprised that after all those years the vote had altered from a strong 'remain' to a 'leave' majority.

To me, yes, unless there'd been big changes to our membership conditions.
You are aware I didn't call for for the referendum?
So what was their reasoning?

When we were asked the question,it was to join a Common Market, which would allow the movement of goods and services to flow more easily. Nothing else.
Those who opposed this move warned against on the basis that the EU wasn't just about a trading relationship,it was also about moving to a political union which would ultimately be directed from the European mainland.....at that time, basically controlled by the strongest economy...West Germany. Myself and many of my contempories dismissed this as impossible, and voted for cheap French wine and Spanish holidays. More fools us!
I voted leave.I was appalled at the number of Eastern Europeans coming into my area, lazing around in coffee shops, spitting all over the place, with no adequate facilities to cope with the additional demand for housing, schools, medical, crime prevention, traffic and so on.I'm on record to say that most of them have stayed following Brexit......they don't want to go to their home. It's a fait accompli. When I go out for a walk,I rarely hear English spoken, and I feel like I'm in Bucharest,Riga or Warsaw. It's not so called homophobic to say that people like their own.....this Board is a testament to that.....humans like to be with their own people. They feel more secure. But it's not right that people should have another set of cultures thrown on them, and be expected to absorb their insecurities without complaint.

While I respect your opinion or anyone who has an opposite view to mine....This post just underlines that the Leave vote for I would say at least 80% of voters was based on immigration. Again, just my view, but a strong government would have had that immigration issue dealt with in a heart beat. Identity Cards would sort a lot of that out. I have lived in 3 countries with ID's...no issues with anyone getting benefits, schooling, jobs, medical, bank accounts if they shouldn't be there.

There's a lot of sense in that and I agree with much of it.

It has to be said though, immigration has gone up since we left.

There's also an element of throwing the baby out with the bath water ...

... fair enough keep as much riff raff out as possible but don't exclude people we need in the NHS, transport, fruit picking, etc. If we had enough British people doing that the foreigners wouldn't be so inclined to come.

As Flanders says, let's have ID cards which are great.

Sadly the British rail against them because 'they're an intrusion on our culture'. The trouble with that is that you'll protect yourself back to a rosy glow hindsight when Britain was great and all the foreigners knew their place.

The world has moved on and we need to adapt, not go backwards.

Thats just a stab in the dark though saying 80% of voters was based on immigration, too much emphasis is piled on immigration because its an easy label to plaster on people. I want immigration controlled, I want to know if the Albanian / Romanian/ Iranian / Afghan has a criminal history, I dont want a convicted rapist, murderer, drug dealer living alongside me and my family. I am 100% ok with the doctors, nurses and many other skilled workers coming to the UK because they provide for themselves as well as others with their varied skillsets. Too many people label people like me racist because I would like to " control " immigration, it stops good honest people speaking out for fear of being labelled. ID cards would be forged in weeks, we need something else, god knows what.

You’re right it is just a guest, but I bet saying 80% voted leave because of immigration is near the number

It's fair to say that the politicians, who wanted to Leave, made it a major part of their campaign ...

.... and Sunak has made it one of his top five pledges.

So, presumably, they must believe it's a big enough issue for the electorate.

Not in the countries I’ve lived in
Would ID cards not have contravened the idea of free movement within the EU? If a Romanian person (to use one of the examples given by LBW) wanted to move to the UK but they had to apply for an ID card to show that they were entitled to live here as an EU citizen, that would essentially be the same as having to apply for a visa, surely

I don't believe so.

I lived in France, for many years, and they have them.

In my experience they love them and never leave home without out.

They're different to passports or visas.

Disagree, it would prove the holder of the ID has all the right credentials to live and or work in the UK. Its not a visa, Here in the UAE I cannot do anything without producing my ID, its required for everything even getting a mobile phone...but it works

Immigration is becoming a bigger issue than it was during the campaign that’s for sure and seemingly the current government haven’t got the slightest idea how to stop it.

“Let’s put them in hotels”
“Let’s put them in old army accommodation “
“Let’s put them on barge’s”
“Let’s fly them to a random African country”

“Actually…we don’t even know where they are”

Immigration is a complete shambles here because the system is so ****e and overwhelmed it’s easy for people to completely disappear if they manage to get here in the first place.

Personally I’m sympathetic to people genuinely fleeing persecution from certain regimes but a massive number are just taking the piss.
