Exactly Kalvin Phillips was dropped from training with City's first team squad for being only 1kg or 2kg over his optimum weight. Put simply players need this type of discipline otherwise they end up like our lot and can't compete for the full 90 mins <ok>

And quite right too. Of course they should be disciplined in those circumstances. No excuse for not running a tight ship. If Marsch/Gracia were too slack and matey with them they were wrong. That's not what the point was about though. It's that people are comparing to an extreme not the norm.

One big difference in pep and Bielsa is pep has no problem dealing with a huge squad and keeping them all happy. Bielsa seemed to only want the tiniest of squads or maybe that’s all he was given. That cost him big time when injuries hit
Very good point.

He likes a small squad. Theory is it keeps everyone involved and motivated. He Values flexibility in players to play multiple positions to cope with injuries and suspensions.

All good unless you have a run of injuries… and have to play too many kids.

I thought you could only have a maximum of 25 in a premier league squad, I could be wrong?

Maximum squad size in the EPL is 25, of players aged over 21. Players aged 21 and under can play without having to be declared as part of the squad.

Man City only have 20 players aged over 21, so they could have registered another 5 players if they so wished

So they do have a small squad (all be it full of quality), backed up by their academy players?

In reality they dont use those that much. They had 17 players who had more than 450 minutes worth of playing time in the EPL. One of those was aged only 18.

Scott Carson who was one of registered squad never played a single minute. They had a further 3 players aged 21 or under who were given playing time, two of those played 27 minutes and 18 minutes respectively. The remaining 3 members of the registered squad played on average 300 minutes, so just over 3 games each in the entire season. One of those was the goalie, Ortega who played 3 full games. Philips and Gomez, made a total of 24 appearances, but only played a total of 630 minutes (7 games)

I’m presuming that’s just premier league matches. When you factor in making the FA cup final and the champions league final that squad must have high fitness levels (all be it they have the ball most of the time).

Yes just EPL games, as Ortega played 3 league cup games and 6 FA Cup games as well.

In total with the forthcoming Champion League Final, City played a total of 61 games (including Charity Shield) using a total of 25 players, although 3 of those played less than 45 minutes of football (Sonny Perkins played double the amount of minutes for ourselves, than these 3 did for City). Rodri played 55 games so far (48 games on a per 90 minutes basis). Not counting the 3 didnt manage to complete half a game, Phillips played in the least games on a per minutes basis, playing the equivalent of 10 games, although he made a total of 21 appearances.

Gundogan, who at 32 is the second oldest player in the squad, made 50 appearances, playing the equivalent of 42 games on a per 90 minutes basis.

Basically City will have managed to play 61 games using in reality 22 players. We played a total of 44 games (including League and FA Cup) and used a total of 31 players. Sonny Perkins appeared the least, managing only 89 minutes of playing time. Only 3 of our squad (that made an appearance) managed to play less than 180 minutes in total, with a further 6 not managing to play 450 minutes (the equivalent of 5 complete games).

In effect the main 22 squad players of Man City were able to play an additional 17 games more than the main 22 squad players of ourselves.

Thanks for that Aski, makes very interesting reading. I think it makes the point that Pep expects a similar, if not quite the same, level of fitness as Bielsa, despite having better quality at his disposal.
