I posted in the general football thread earlier about the high performance podcast - if you've never listened, I recommend it - and they were sitting down with Brentford DoF Phil Giles. I was interested because of the success they've achieved but also because of the Rasmus connection. Others on here have remarked on how Brentford didnt replace Rasmus and have actually got stronger. What I latched onto was Giles' admission around data driven recruitment and speed of change. In short, data got overblown and they have recruited poorly in the past and now data is used to identify people but its ultimately who they are and what they are like that gets them in the door. They never consider people with the wrong attitude anymore. They went through a phase of growth that was dramatic and involved significant change in a short period of time. Many people from many parts of the club were brought in and it didnt work. It didn't have time to gel and settle. It was too much too soon.

Now all of that sounds like it should be obvious to me. However, it made me think that this is exactly where we are now. Already had massive change and now facing even more in an even shorter period and an immediate record of blatantly data driven recruitments that gave little if any weight to the people and the culture.

And we have the same architect at the helm. Hence my feeling that we really are in crisis. Money is not going to fix the issue we have IMO so financial health is not a reassurance to me.
So he didn’t learn from previous mistakes?

Whilst I understand why many on here scoff at the prospect of one of these two coming to Saints, I'm not sure I would be so quick to dismiss it. Managers, just like players, want to get paid as much as possible. We can afford them and they are both out of work. Add that potential fat salary to a clean slate rebuild, a veritable war chest (compared to the rest of the division) and a position at one of the biggest clubs in the country outside of the CL competitors (who certainly won't be looking at them) and why not? Last time I checked there weren't any vacancies in the PL. Leeds and Leicester will probably join us and the promoted sides will stick with who took them up so a year in the Championship won't look so bad to someone who backs themselves as those two certainly will.
I agree - I could see Potter thinking that Saints, with backing in the transfer window, would be an interesting challenge.

Surely it's a matter of probability that we'll get a decent (read successful) manager soon. In my lifetime I treat the ones in bold as good'uns ...

McMenemy
Nichol

Brantfoot
Ball
Merrington
Souness
D.Jones
Hoddle

Gray
Strachan
Sturrock
Wigley
Redknapp
Burley
Pearson
Poortvliet
Wotte
Pardew
Adkins
Poch
Koeman

Puel
Pellegrino
Hughes
Hassenhuttl
N.Jones
Selles

We never seem to go more than 3 poor ones in a row!

How can you call Pardew good? Had the biggest budget in the league, Best players and we didn't even make play offs. I disagree with that personally.

15 points deduction and came just outside of the playoffs, won a trophy.

Let’s get away from the fact that it was pretty much a side with a new core so needed time to gel

I get that, But for me should have at least got playoffs considering his stature and experience in the leagues.

Perhaps Experience isn't everything, who knew.

His work with SRL and Jose alone deserves merit, the former credits him for turning his career around and realising his true potential. David Connolly and Deano were inspired signings along with Antonio, Jaidi, and many others.
He laid the foundations after the "ground zero" of administration for the success of the double promotion team, it's churlish not to acknowledge his work imo.

I'd argue it was Cortese that signed these players, Pardew for me wasn't that good IMO.
We built a remarkable team.. way above what I expected, But managing them was his job, Not hiring them.

I disagree, Deano, Antonio, Connolly, Jose, SRL, Puncheon were not identified by Cortese, no way. It's not that easy to mould a team into playing the great football we played in the second half of that season within a few months.

Rickie Lambert was identified by being the top scoring striker in the division we were going into. <laugh>

That's just one player and like I said before Pardew changed his diet and work ethic completely which SRL himself even acknowledged to make him into the player that he became in the second half of his career.

Do you honestly think that Cortese built that team on his own?...:emoticon-0145-shake

Nah, I definitely don’t. But we did just go and buy people who were in the team of the year/awards too.

It worked though!

Pardew gets a bad rap by some Saints fans because they think he is a bit of a smug prick, but I only look at the work he did with us.
We never started that season with all of the squad, it was the vital additions in January that took the team to another level but unfortunately a little too late to make the play-offs.

I never brought up his smugness, Just don't think he wad that good of a manager.

Well done he helped Lambert improve slightly, By getting him fit.. no doubt had other club personel to thank for that too.
