This is a direct consequence of poor communication between Senior Police Officers and on the Street 'plod',I fail to see how any of us should be liable to foot the bill. The guidance was vague at best and more of less left the on duty constables to make an on the spot assessment. It's fairly evident that this has backfired in spectacular fashion.

Sadly, any out of court settlement invariably comes out of our pockets which leaves a sour taste in the tax payers mouth...
Nah

Conscious decision, effectively communicated and actioned.

Whether anyone likes it or not they couldn't risk looking stupid if the Coronation was disrupted so I imagine decided to just arrest anyone they thought would do and deal with the consequences later.

Much easier to go 'oh yeah, sorry about that, not to worry' after the event, even if it means paying off a few, than have decades of slagging off for not stopping serious disruption or worse.

Maybe not right, but pretty understandable (same reason why they let people put tents up overnight...you try putting a tent up and sleeping overnight on the Mall this weekend and see how you get on)

Met Police chief claims fake stewards caught with bottles of paint they planned to throw at coronation procession

The Metropolitan Police commissioner has claimed officers had to target a "criminal network" during the coronation, which included people posing as stewards - who were caught with bottles of paint they intended to throw at the parade.

Sir Mark Rowley claimed police had received intelligence that people planned to use rape alarms and loud hailers to disrupt the coronation, "extensively vandalise monuments" and "throw paint at the procession".

His defence of the police operation comes after six anti-monarchy protesters from the campaign group Republic who were arrested during the coronation were released without charges being brought against them.

Writing for the Evening Standard, Sir Mark described the arrests as "unfortunate" - but said it was "frustrating that there are things we are unable to share".
