Yeh we will definitely be selling a couple of players this summer we’d rather not lose.

The real test of the board will be in ensuring we don’t lose all of them, and that those we do lose are replaced properly.

As an example Amad is definitely going. But if we can convince Utd to send us Elanga for example instead (and why wouldn’t they) - it softens if.

Let’s say Ballard goes but we get that van Hecke lad instead.

Neil goes but we pull the Henderson miracle out of the hat.

Clarke goes and we get the next big PL2 winger we’ve not heard of.

I have every confidence in this recruitment team. But likewise I’m very conscious that I think a lot of our success this season has been due to the consistency between last seasons squad and this seasons. It’s imperative that we keep the vast majority, even if it’s also realistic that we should look to cash in on a couple
I know that people keep saying we will lose some players this season (and we may) but just remember, some of the players being mentioned left Premiership clubs to come to us to be able to play regular football. Unless they are going to go to a club that can give them that then they might want to stay here, even if we don't go up this year (which is still a possibility). :emoticon-0141-whew:

Yes but footballers are also ambitious beasts. They've come here to get confidence and have got that confidence. If they're offered a chance to play in the EPL and back themselves to play regularly then its going to be a tough sell to keep them. Not saying they'd all leave, just that we've given them the confidence to back themselves.

Jack Clarke, now, having had the confidence we've given him, would surely back himself to get in to a bottom half PL team.

Not saying its the right choice for any of them. Just that the very fact we have players who will back themselves to do it, and we have players that EPL teams will want, can only be a good thing.

Offer to potentially treble their wages aswell I think at best we keep everyone until jan, but it’s almost guaranteed we lose one or two in the summer, I’ll be gutted to lose them but happy for them as they’ve been a success so ultimately we all benefit (assuming we replace wisely)

I'll give an example for instance. If Burnley came in and offered O'Nien a 2 year deal to play in the EPL, even at the same wages as us, I wouldn't want to stop him realising that goal. It wouldn't be about money for him. It would be about playing in the EPL and whilst I'm sure he'd love to stay and do it with us, he will want to take that chance.

Paddy Roberts is another one. He's reaching that age where he needs to start playing in the EPL if he wants a solid career there. Would we really expect him to be turning down a move to say Brighton or Bournemouth now? He'd likely get plenty of starts at Bournemouth.

The younger ones I'd hope might give it a year, or two, or three extra to keep developing. Dan Neil for example might interest a lower table side now. But another year or two and he could be looking at a top half team. Same for the likes of Hume, Ballard, Clarke, Patterson.

Jack Clarke is a Leeds lad thru and thru tho. So if they manage to stay up and want to sign him I think we'd have a hell of a battle on. Mind you if they wanted to throw Joffy in as part of the deal it would go some of the way to softening the blow.

All about money.

Worth saying though that even Real Madrid have being selling players, usually one good one , each season for a while. Leicester do. Brighton do, and so on.

I'd expected to lose at least one. Clarke, Cirkin, Ballard, Roberts the obvious possibles to me. Hope not, but TM has mentioned the likelyhood before and its no secret that such a thing isour direction.

We just have to use the cash well If that happens.

spot on. Some fans will remark about us being a “selling club” but 99% of clubs are.

the reason we haven’t been a selling club in the past is frankly because nobody has wanted our players (including even us)

I'll need a tin hat for this, but if we have to let 1 go to subsidise the evolution of the squad, I'd choose Patterson before any of the above. He's talented, but he's the most overrated of the current youngsters and the one where we may get a fee greater than his value.

My thoughts too. I do think he has a lot of potential and will become more valuable in a year or two, but arguably easier to replace than others.

The sensible mid to large sized clubs will essentially be selling clubs in the modern football world, sell a couple of players to make a profit and invest a percentage into future prospects. Ideally players sold should already have replacements available at the club to step up…i think we have that balance right now.

It’s the only way to be self sustaining and I’d rather that than be anywhere near going out of business like a few years ago.

I disagree about him being overrated - IMHO he is a good young keeper and on his way to being a very good keeper,
as keepers hit their prime later than other players.

We have a longer window to make money by selling Patto and we will get a better deal if we wait a year or so.

Plus we don't really have a ready replacement at the club.

I guess him being overrated or not depends on how you think he is rated.

Many Sunderland fans see him as being a fantastic shot stopper who is one of the best keepers in this league. Some think he's already good enough for the Premier League. Someone over the road (obviously an exceptionally ridiculous example) said yesterday that he's better than the Current England Number 1.

Yet, by most metrics and statistics, he's basically a mid table Championship keeper at this point who is saving (and conceding) about as many goals as would be expected from the shots he faces. He's bottom 10 in the league for distribution, but top 5 for claiming crosses.

None of that is criticism and it's also worth noting that he is the youngest keeper to have made over 20 appearances this season. Given the progression that he's made in the last 18 months, he's undeniably a great young talent. But no-one knows how far he can go, so if you can get Premier League level money for a mid table Championship keeper (with some sell on fees to cover his potential upside) then you're getting good value in my opinion.

My views on Patterson are that he could very easily be overrated by some if he starts getting media attention and seen as the next big England keeper. Keepers can nowadays attract a premium so I reckon with another 12 months of progression he could sell for a lot of money, possibly more than he's "worth".

There aren't any I'd be "happy" to see go more than the others. It will all come down to sizes of bids. If clubs want to overpay for their potential, and that player wants the move, then great.

Agree with most of that, but I am having flashbacks to what happened the last time we sold a good young keeper...

I agree. And, as we have painfully found out in the past, getting a good keeper is far from easy, it just seems it. I also seem to remember TM saying that he was one ( along with Neil in that conversation) that we shouldn't be losing.

I'd rather see him sign another contract, if he hasnt already.

There doesn’t seem to be anybody considers the possibility KLD might not be thinking of selling anyone that weakens the team and is quite happy to improve the squad after saying how close they’ve come to the premiership in their first attempt.

Maybe. Hopefully too. But it hasn't been a secret that it might happen, and the way we're being run is meant to absorb any shock of a good player leaving, and keep improving.
