RCN nurses reject latest pay deal.

Under the terms of that deal, staff are set to receive a one-off 2% salary uplift and 4% Covid recovery bonus for the current year, and then a permanent 5% pay rise from April. Many of the union’s members have been unhappy however at the terms of the deal.

General Secretary of Union recommended accepting the deal but nurses voted no.

It would be a terrible shame if one of their family members died because they cant get the care when the nurses are striking.

Members of the Unison union - which includes some nurses and ambulance crews - have accepted the pay offer.

The offer is a 5% pay rise for 2023/24.

And there is an extra one-off lump sum of at least £1,655 to top up the past year's salary.

It's a terrible shame when anyone dies, but imposing year on year pay cuts on the people who do the actual caring, is no way to help anyone. How many lives have you saved in your career btw?

    Terrible comparison, Archie.

My job isn't saving lives. That's not what I chose to do or am paid to do.

How many jobs have I accepted the pay and then went on strike? Never.
How many lives have I put in danger by refusing to work? None.

Off to a Headteachers conference tomorrow. Looks like we'll be taking the brave decision to support our hard-working brothers and sisters in their fight for fair pay and luxury resources like A4 paper, writing books and pencils to teach kids properly.

    Michelle Mone guest speaker.

Does anyone know if the one off payments as part of negotiations on pay deals is subject to tax and NI?

Can only guess - but yes they will be - as they arise by reason of employment and are not part of redundancy / PILON

All income is subject to tax. I think there's an upper limit for N.I., no idea what it is though.

It pissed me off when I took my Royal Mail pension whilst still working on the railway, to discover I had to pay tax on all of it, no allowance, nothing. I've already paid tax on everything I earned while I was building up that pension. The working man gets screwed every which way in this country, from the cradle to the grave.
