Dear Badger
As part of our work to tackle dark money in politics, Good Law Project has been undertaking a series of investigations looking into who is donating to whom in UK politics.
Good Law Project wants to expose the undisclosed donors, cronyism, misinformation and lobbying that surrounds our policies and public debate, and to hold power to account.
We want to share with you the first installment of our investigations:

1. The Carlton Club and its dark donors
We've been looking into The Carlton Club: a secretive private members club from which huge sums of money flood into the Conservative Party.
In the first quarter of 2023 alone, Tory MPs received over £100K in
donationsfrom the club, including £15,000 to the new vice-chair, Lee Anderson. In total the club has donated £1.3m to the Conservative Party.
Good Law Project has learned that Strandbrook Limited, a company controlled by German property tycoon, Henning Conle, has donated £50,000 to the Carlton Club this year, and £150,000 since 2020.
Conle is alleged to be a major funder of the
far right in Germany, making unlawful donations totalling £115,000 to far-right party, Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). AfD received the funds in contravention of German law with Conle considered to be the original
source. Last
year, a German court ruled AfD a suspected threat to democracy.
This is just the start. Good Law Project will continue to investigate who is really donating to MPs and ministers within our democracy and having undue influence over our politics. We will share with you what we find and explore legal challenges we can undertake.
