Southgate definitely has England on the right path.
Since abandoning the 5 at the back for the Qatar WC we actually look half decent and usually brush most teams aside with just the elite countries giving us serious problems.
The question now is can he develop that 4-3-3 further into something that's less reliant on a Henderson or Phillips in the midfield three ?
What we're clearly crying out for is a Luca Modric type of midfield ball player to complement the excellent Bellingham and the combative Declan Rice.
Which begs the question could James Maddison be that player as surely the only way we'll find such a player is to adapt one who's more used to playing an attacking role. Put simply all our attacking and creative players just don't play as deep as a Modric for Real Madrid or Croatia because they prefer to operate in the final third, whilst our more defensive midfielders lack the technical ability to make the difference when we have comfortable possession at the back.
If not Maddison then who else could make the difference and become England's playmaker ?
