Merged the two threads. Lets not try and make any more eh, don't want a repeat of the Nolan saga....

"towards being able to operate within the boundaries of Uefa's financial fair play rules".

this is why Chelsea have gone the same route and man city and i'm sure every club will follow suite.looking at it from a different angle this could be the loophole so to speak of getting around the fair play rules, now i don't agree with it one bit in fact it'll always be SJP to me but this seems to be the trend/route clubs are going

edit let's just hope we don't have the morons outside SJP with the bedsheets

Unfortunately, it's just the way football is nowadays. But you see it happening to other clubs and just hope it doesn't happen to you. Emirates, Reebok, Britannia, they're all there. Just Sports Direct Arena sounds a lot more ****ing naff.

Like other people have said. I'm less angry, more sad,

It's a double blow. Not only have we lost our name but the new one is ****e. at least soemthing like the Emirates stadium sounds reasonable. Sports Direct Arena? ffs, it sounds like some dodgy american ****hole 2nd rate stadium. ARENA? REALLY?

No because apparently Ashley is willing to commit to a 10 year contract for both stadium and shirt sponsorship.

I think I am just in denial about this because I just feel empty in side.

If we get a shirt sponsor by Sports Direct, I won't be buying a Toon kit for a while.

Yep, this :( Emirates, Eithad, Britannia, KC... don't sound too bad in comparison to Sports Direct Arena do they? :(

To be honest i'm not a traditionalist so as long as we get a decent amount of money out of it (please someone tell me we are) then i doesn't make me dislike him more than i already did

he won't want it called that for long he'll want someone else to pay so the tena ultra dry stadium awaits <ok>

I'm going to wait to see how this pans out first. Sportsdirect@sjp barely impacted, if the Metro station and the sign by the Milburn don't change no one will call it anything other than St James Park. It's not great, but if its quiet (how many more SD logos can be stick on it?) its not a huge issue. I just hope its not a ****ty shirt sponsor.

I'm surprised he went with arena though with Dave Whelan being his mortal enemy, should've been Stadium or Colosseum.

Like most NUFC fans I was horrified by the old signage at SJP being taken down and replaced recently, and consequently felt sickened this evening when news broke of the stadium itself being renamed.

But after the initial dismay, you have to have some perspective and admit that this is what top flight football in this country is becoming. History and tradition is a commercial asset now, which unless you are backed by a sovereign state will almost certainly be sold. Even then it's no guarantee for keeping a football club's long-standing identity sacred.

In many ways the surprise was that it wasn't done sooner and let's face it, the stadium is so covered already in Sports Direct advertising/propaganda that the place was already unrecognisable to the one in our hearts.

In tough financial times sports sponsorship is becoming a tough business and this is being done to make the club more competitive on that level. We won't profit from Sports Direct, but this is a move to showcase a package that could see the stadium name change with the duration of a contract. It's a sad, horrible reality that ALL clubs in this big league must swallow. More ironically it will only get worse the more successful the team is on the pitch, the more new fans are drawn to club and the more we get positive exposure or games shown on Sky. So before all the inevitable baiting comes in from rival fans keen to wind us up and spark a backlash that kills our season, fans of all teams who value club heritage should stop and think. This is just another very sorry nail in the coffin for what football in this country once was, but we can't have it all ways.

Anyway let's be honest, the stadium has been St.James' Park in numerous guises for well over 100 years and that isn't about to change with a press release. We won't refer to it with any other name and the change will not stick – this isn't a new stadium build, it's a historical landmark locally and globally. Good luck changing all the road signs and maps! I have a sneaky feeling commercial sponsors won't take the option because this will only prove the change won't work, but we'll see.

The fact is, I'll still call it St. James' Park and you'll still call it St. James' Park because that is it's name. If it must have a temporary nickname, let's settle for 'fortress' after this season eh?

(Oh yeah and Mike – it wouldn't have taken a creative marketing genius to have opted for 'Sports Direct Park' instead. But I guess that might have been a slightly easier pill for us all to swallow...)

Our shirt sponsorship deal with Northern Rock will also expire at the end of this season, which presents would-be sponsors with the opportunity to acquire both the naming rights and shirt sponsorship deals.

It won't be named Sports Direct Arena long term unless Ashley pays for it to be named that at the end of the season.

Agent mike does it again your stadium already looks like a sportsdirect shop window now.
mind you i do have 3 big sportsdirect mugs 1 is at the side of my bed used as piss pot the other 2are still sealed in a box it feels like im pissing in your stadium
