Never has the town of poughkeepsie been so searched after <laugh> I now know that it had something to do with whaling, that 39.8% of its inhabitants are non hispanic white and that a Hendrick Jans van Ooosteron was one of its founders !! Other than that I guess it has something to do with those nasty chess computers that have the impertinence to sometimes beat us <doh> Oh, it's also famous for Smith Brothers Menthol cough drops.

scrabble was invented there or there abouts

Yes you got it....

Scrabble was invented by an unemployed architect
While you might assume Scrabble was invented by a writer, teacher, or librarian, that honor actually goes to Alfred Mosher Butts, an out of work architect from Poughkeepsie, New York. He combined elements from anagrams and crossword puzzles to create a scoring word game.

It was indeed Dick Fosbury ! You could say his innovation turned out to be a bit of a flop. Apparently when trying to master the straddle technique of jumping (normal at that time but he was useless at it) he broke his hand trying to jump over a stool. Over to you Andy.
Thanks, cologne. :)
