So would you give Chris Martin another year? Seems like he might be pretty influential on the team and was given the captaincy on Saturday. Assuming it was a relatively cheap deal I'd be inclined to keep him on.

I think I would.
It's an interesting one. We probably all rolled our eyes at signing a 34 year old after letting 32 year old Charlie Austin go. But Martin has done what 5 consecutive 90 mins in a row now, Austin couldn't or at least didn't manage that.

Depends what division we are in regarding Martin. If we stay in the championship then it would be a no from me. A very immobile player, god knows how he didn't get booked on Saturday. He did his job though which is to be a nuisance. From a purely footballing perspective, he's not the sort of player I would want to go in to next season with.

Reactions: SW Ranger and awjm
He's full of enthusiasm and even when he misplaces a pass or gets caught out of position, his head doesn't go down. It's pure encouragement from the sidelines. The set up suited us and I know that yourself was calling it a while ago. The wing back positions need energy, fitness and enthusiasm. Kakay and Drewe both showed that yesterday. You don't have to even be the best crosser of the ball as long as you're planting it in the area. I thought Field slotted in perfectly aswell, able to read the midfield play from a view further back in the defence. Well done to Gareth and Dobson. It won't work every week but it's a big stepping stone towards a balanced set up.

One thing we, the fans, are not known for is our consistency. When Critchley put Dozzell in the centre while putting Field on the flank we roundly condemned him for it. Not that I am jumping to his defence given he seems to have been like a fish out of water in managing our players. But what precisely is the difference leaving aside the very obvious fact that it worked for Gazza?

A lot of difference.

Field has played defensive midfielder and centre back before. He has played emergency cb for us several times before.

He has not played right midfielder in a 4-3-3 formation as Critchley tried.
Why have him there and Dozzell as CDM...was just madness.

But when you only have 2 CD and both first pick backs are out...and you see the need for 3 at back...which GA explained in the post match interview..( to cut out the holes). You either play Field or Kakay there.

And at moment we need Kakay as a LWB.
So it is obvious to me why it happened. And it was great

The difference is, Crichley moved Field to the right side of midfield whilst still playing a back 4.

Beat me to it Beth. The more I see how Ainsworth set us up on Saturday, the more I believe that Crichley was so out of his depth. It has been blatantly obvious to any fan what was missing in our team. Width and balance. We had both on Saturday even with the right footed Kakay on the left. Field played in a position where he could see the whole picture unfold Infront of him rather than constantly looking behind. We still played direct but from angles rather than straight down the middle. I have no problem with that.

A massive difference surely?

Theres a progression from the wingback position that I actually touched upon in a practical exam back in the late 90's. I got slaughtered for it but now witness Pep doing it at City and Klopp attempting it at Liverpool and that's for the wingback to move into central midfield when possession is on the opposite flank. Think I was ahead of my time!!!! Should ring my tutors and give them hell.
