From the Athletic:

Liverpool won’t be unsustainable with transfer spending — John W Henry

By James Pearce

Principal owner John W Henry says Liverpool won’t go down “unsustainable paths” when it comes to transfer spending as the owners look to invest “wisely” in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Henry recently ruled out a full sale of the club as he confirmed that Fenway Sports Group were in talks with a number of interested parties over a minority stake in the Premier League club.

“We continue building at Liverpool Football Club in a responsible manner,” Henry told the Liverpool Echo.

“We’ve seen many football clubs (including LFC previously) go down unsustainable paths. We have and will continue to focus our attention on investing wisely in the transfer market and we remain incredibly proud of our squad.

“At the same time we continue investing in our training facilities, our Main Stand and currently the Anfield Road Stand. These are all physical reflections of our resolve and how very seriously Fenway Sports Group takes its responsibilities for this great club.”

The Athletic revealed in November that FSG were open to the idea of selling Liverpool if they received sufficiently attractive offers.

However, none were forthcoming and they have since turned their attention to finding a “strategic partner” to help grow the club further.

“While we formalised a process that has identified potential investors for the club, we remain fully committed to the long-term success of the club,” Henry added.

Earlier this season FSG president Mike Gordon took a step back with Liverpool chief executive Billy Hogan assuming greater responsibilities in terms of the day to day running of the club. Gordon has been heavily involved in the search for new investment.

“Mike remains fully committed to the club. He did take time off for a while this winter, but is a long way off from retirement,” Henry said.

“Billy continues to be a driving force for the club. As CEO of the club, his remit is much larger than most people would think. Jurgen and Billy are a very strong combination and work very well together.”

Which to me sounds like "Don't expect someone like Bellingham, Mount, or Rice. Expect someone you've never heard of."

"Wisely" from an owner to me means someone cheap who might be underpriced and might turn into a star in the future. Not someone who will solve the problem now.

well just because players aren't "big" names doesn't mean they aren't exactly what we need and vice versa after all Pogba was a "big" name signing .

I think thats a bit overstretching.

mount fits the profile of distressed asset thats the right age and right contract situation to be bought for a pice thats in our bracket and wages we won't care about overly.

Bellingham has always been a pipe dream unless theres a spectacular release clause in there.

forget rice. he is vastly overpriced despite his contract situation and will be going to whoever jumps the queue when it forms.

you are right though, they will always sign for value.

Nunez and gakpo as exmaples. real come on and its a profit, end of.

thats how we work.

We bought lots of decent players under FSG, sometimes for pretty high fees. Alison, VVD, Nunez.
I think we'll get some decent players in this summer, but just don't expect Chelsea levels of spending, that's all they're saying and I'm alright with that, because I don't think we need as many players as some may do.

They're just managing expectations.

We don't need any for the front 3 (who are generally the most expensive), we certainly need a couple in midfield and 1 or 2 in defence (still don't really have an option at RB).

I think that's spot on. We spend big when we need to and when Klopp has identified who he wants. We don't do extravagant and neither should we. As pointed out above, it's the unearthed gems (as much as the odd big spend on one key player) that have got us where we are with Klopp. I like the idea of developing and growing a team rather than a set of ready-mades.

if you are writing out the first 11 next season and we have either of fabinho or Henderson in it we have not down the job.

when klopp looks back at his bench he cannot see gomez, matip, fabinho, Henderson as the main go to people.

it won't be bad if he is looking at diaz, jota, carvalho, doak as attacking options but cb cover is just not up to top 4 levels and cm cover is lacking and slowing down

Largely agree with that except Fabinho could well have turned a corner, as the phrase goes. He played really well at the weekend.

I agree completely. Just saying, we will probably not be spending as much as we hoped this summer.

His wage demands would put him second only to Salah. I suspect that might put him out of our reach... Unless that's all a smoke show and he'd take less than what's being bandied about. (Which is possible, rags being rags after all)

thaigo 200k a week. done and should go.
Henderson on what 160k
frimino 180k
etc
etc

mounts age means if the fee is reasonable the wage won't be an issue.

He is reputedly wanting £240kpw from Chelsea and therefore presumably would be at something in that range from anyone else .

has to be. its hardly unreasonable ask given the state of chelsea's madness.

sterling got 350k off them
koulibaly 290k
Kante is on 290k
James is playing less than him and on 250k a week.

i strongly suspect a lot if the new buys are being paid under the table as well

why should a key player up to tuchels sacking accept less than their right wing back???

because they rate James higher .

imo he is far more easily replaced the downside of James is he appears to be injury prone .

Well, it's more about if you pay one that (irrespective of what you or I might agree on their deserving it) then as a club they cannot expect the next player along won't ask for the same when they play just as big a part in chelsea's first team.

next lfc player who's up for a renewal who's "vital" to out side will want 300k a week cos salah gets it.

luckily we got all the vvd types done before salah and have clearly decided mane could go rather than get that. now firmino is off.

which is why i have my doubts regarding Mount unless he accepts less

he dominated casimero who looks like he ate another man utd player and was liming round.

fabinho might be feeling a bit fitter and match sharper but he's not able to keep doing this year on year. let's not kid ourselves but let's support him to deliver this season and let future take care of itself.
