Same here. I've been reading the debate without having any idea how to contribute. All I know is, that at 16 I was a stroppy ****, at 18 I was a criminal, at 21 I was a proper ****. At 30 I looked back and thought, I wish I hadn't been that person. At 45 now and a father, I can't quite believe how I used to think and act.
Estrogen, that would be The Pill then. And fish have changed sex apparently with all the estrogen flushed into the rivers. So why not humans that drink waste water as treated? There are huge gender issues with kids nowadays, that I don't remember any of in the 1960's.
That’s really weird as I was thinking along these lines this morning.....where has this seemingly modern concept of “Trans” come from ? I mean it’s only really come to the knowledge of the vast majority in the last 10 years or so....and I can’t believe there were 1000’s of “Trans” people hiding their true selves in the 70’s/80’s. I better not give all my opinions on here for fear of being called a “phobe”....however I have some theories
Of course, homosexuality was illegal until 1967, and thereafter it became de rigueur to follow cross dressers like Bowie, Lou Reed and Elton John. But still, I don't recall there being a big problem in schools. Now, increasingly, quite young children are being asked their gender. Some parents even dress young boys up as girls to explore their feminine side. If anything's going to mess with that poor child's head, it's that.
Not entering the debate, but why can’t you believe that people hid their true selves in times which were much less tolerant or open than now, times when you could be criminalised for your nature? It was only 1967 that homosexuality was decriminalised and anti gay stigma was pretty open for a long time after that, as I’m sure you remember. You and others, including me, might have been unaware of trans issues precisely because people were hiding their true selves as much as they could. A friend of mine’s father, now long dead, was a prison governor, way back in time. After he died his family discovered a wardrobe full of women’s clothing in his attic, where he would go to ‘potter’. His wife was aware of his ‘hobby’ but never told his three sons. I bet there were thousand like that, compared to very few Jan Morris’. This man might have lived most of his life repressing his nature out of fear of the social consequences.
I just don’t think there were thousands of kids back in the day who somehow felt they were trapped in the wrong bodies….just my opinion that’s all. And having that opinion, I often wonder where this modern phenomenon has come from and why it’s now seemingly a big thing. Btw, why start off your post with “not entering the debate”…when you were doing precisely that with your post ?
I'll stick my neck out, although I know one or two on here will recoil in horror! In my opinion, some, definitely not all, but some of the stuff we're seeing now is a 'fashion' or 'trend', as opposed to real conviction. It's the latest thing to identify in a certain way etc etc. Certainly, when it comes to sex changes, many people change their minds down the line. There's no way anyone under 18 should be making these decisions.
Wonder what led to the rise of left handed people in the 20th century… the people of the 19th century can’t remember those lefties in their time Wonder what led to the rise in figures of homosexuality during the second half of the 20th century.. the people of the early 20th century can’t remember there being all these gays in their time It really is ****ing basic stuff, I’m younger than most on here, and if anyone was even suspected of being gay at my school they’d have been given a ****ing awful time, there certainly was zero space to be trans, oh trans people can be traced back to ancient civilisations. Who’d of thought when we know more about ourselves than ever, the more knowledge, information, and whilst still ****, level of acceptance is higher than ever, the more people are coming out as trans. And the backlash is predominantly coming from… the older generations who object to change who reference when they were young, which has been the case throughout history if you look at any humanitarian movement.
I haven't seen anyone on here who is against any of this stuff Will. The Scottish legislation has been questioned and we're now musing over people's motivations etc. Of course homosexuality, transgender etc has been around for thousands of years.
As expected any sensible debate on the subject becomes too emotive and many on both sides are unwilling to talk about it logically and sensibly without accusing the other of something or other……. I’ll leave you to it and bow out of the subject
Just to clear it up Wills, as I’m sure this was a dig at my earlier post, I was talking about the Trans issue…..not “gays” as you call them. I would have thought that was pretty ****ing obvious……but as I say, no sensible conversation can be had without people like yourself getting yourself worked up.
Well said, Will. I'm been staying out of this because I have no experience of it, but some of the reactions on here seem plain daft to me, the most ridiculous of all being that women would be put in danger from male rapists pretending to be transgender. It's plain that a rapist needs only to join the police to get easy access to vulnerable women.
