we have "agreed" terms with the player and would now need to do a deal with his club who would presumably just say "pay the release clause".

A release clause can be negotiated down if the seller is open to it. It's not the same as a buyout clause. We could do a structured deal like we have before. The word is that Benfica are a good club to deal with so who knows. I can't help but think it's either/or with Bellingham being the other one, not both. Happy days if it is both.

Surely pre-agreement means its before an agreement has been made? I would say we have a pre-agreement with Mbappe, Messi, and Neymar too, because an agreement hasn't been made! <ok>

As the trope goes... believe it when I see the lean. The ever reliable Daily Fail thinks we've all but signed both Enzo and Jude and its just a formality now.

One source I read suggested that is exactly what happened. Liverpool have agreed not to activate the release clause in January in exchange for getting a lower price in summer.

We'll wait for the leans to see.

I have high hopes for Bellingham coming to us based on the credible sources. The Enzo one, I'm not so sure based on the fact we looked at him in the summer at £10m and didn't advance. I don't know what he's done at the WC and I'd like to think our transfer team won't be going in for him on the back of.that. it's not my money so ..... let's get them both <whistle>

This is really one that smells slightly off.

If we were about to cook a chicken dinner the whiff might be enough for us to toss it in the bin and reach for the just eat app.

As the player is at a world blood cup, and presumably 100% focused on that, a lot of what's being said seems to be wildly made up.

Yes unless we were thinking "we don't need a new midfielder, we'll get Jude next year, and Milner is still young for now" that and summer was prior to the rumoured Klopp/Keita fallout.

It could be a matter of realizing the hard way how bad we are in midfield and now trying to correct it. That's the only thing that would sense if we were going for him

    Esp in January.

They have all the cards. Contract length, world cup performance, top of portugese league by a mile, in last 16 of cl plus easy tie drawn.... they really do not need to compromise at this point.

Which is another reason why this smells funky.

It might not be January. One article claimed we would get him for less than release clause in exchange for waiting until summer and not poaching him mid-season.

No sources named in the article... So could be purely fabricated by the journalist of course.

One great thing to spot with hackery is anyone buying credibility today with something that might happen 6 months from now.

Most hacks rely on this ****.

You've two flows to football rumours. The scramble to pile on something actually happen and the scramble to get your version of an unfounded rumour heard over the rest.

Once the ti.eframe starts going out, we'll it's not the first is it.

The most obvious thing, of course, being that everything we read is speculation anyway. His name being linked in the summer has no more credence than it being linked now.

Pre-agreement is shorthand for pre-contract agreement. If you can get one of those, you put yourself in line for talks with the player once it's allowed.

Enzo is the long term Thiago replacement.
Jude is the long term Hendo upgrade.

    Get it done.

Surely fernandez is a midget fabinho no? Or a e
    wijnaldum perhaps.

Bellingham is a Gerrard wannabe running off about the place.

Nah Enzo is a very classy player. He can break the lines with his passing, gets the ball into the final 3rd, very creative and can also control tempo.

    He's the Thiago regen.
