As to a foot shooting contest, Johnson can at least take credit for getting Brexit over the line, even if not completed, and for the Covid vaccination roll out, and for leading the way in Europe in helping Ukraine after the invasion by Russia. Truss on the other hand could go down as one of the, if not the, shortest serving prime ministers in British history having achieved exactly nothing.
Yes. All the more reason for saying Johnson’s foot shot was the more spectacular. Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Truss started with little to no record of achievement and has maintained form.
An interesting perspective. I'm still not exactly clear what Johnson did wrong apart from eating cake, maintaining ill-discipline at No 10 and exaggerating wildly in answer to certain questions, which he was known for anyway. It's never been established that he lied. Truss on the other hand has caused utter turmoil on the international financial markets, such that the UK has recently been compared to Greece.
I see there's a petition to bring Johnson back! Gutter politics started due to his constant lies, cover ups, criminality, scandal after scandal. As big a majority as he won, ironically, he's the architect of the Tories downfall. Is this the best they have to offer the country?
One way or another we are in this S@@@ because of Brexit Cameron, plagued by his Brexiteers, made a wrong guess and thought no one would vote for Brexit....didn't really take it seriously, lost and so had to go. May was brought into get Brexit done, and she couldn't find away of doing it legally and to our advantage...and had to go Boris got Brexit done ( he also got rid of a lot of the old guard who had experience of running a country) and told a few porky pies about what was happening (NI protocol, trade deals etc..)..and was any way morally decrepit and so had to go. Truss, a remainer or a Brexiteer I can't remember which, was a chancer who was low down the intelligence pecking order came in...had no skill or knowledge...and has to go. AND FOR THE LAST TIME GOLDIE...Boris didn't get the vaccine roll out done. The NHS did that, and it is nothing to do with Brexit. It is all to do with the fact the cheapest and near quickest of the vaccines was developed in this country...It was because of Kate Bingham and the vaccine task force, the NHS and the volunteers. (allot the money that the vaccine rollout cost has been recooped by selling off the vaccine centre in Oxford too...b*******s)
Beth, I assume you're joking about Brexit being the cause of the current problem (Truss was a Remainer), the UK's massive debts due to lockdown and furlough after a worldwide pandemic, and the energy crisis flowing from Russia's invastion of Ukraine. Brussels made a pig's ear of the Covid vaccine. Remember Macron being so desperate, he kept vaccines destined for the UK? And the EU talking down perfectly good vaccines? If we hadn't left the EU, there's every chance we'd have been in the middle of that debacle. The NHS did wonderfully on the vaccine, as did Kate Bingham who was appointed by Boris Johnson's government. He can take credit even if he wasn't wearing a white coat and injecting people
Well Goldie... pleased Boris can take credit for the vaccine rollout as he appointed Kate Bingham. I am therefore going to take all of the credit for the vaccine .. I taught Sarah Gilbert how to set up her lab for Health and Safety originally. So I did the vaccine all myself too
Given the complete and utter shambles since Boris was ousted, his cake eating and parties seem like very small fry in comparison.
If Truss, after dodging an urgent question leaving Mordaunt to assert that the PM is ‘not cowering under a desk’ also doesn’t turn up to support her Chancellor’s announcement, we can only assume that the ‘urgent matters’ keeping her out of the Commons are either some kind of breakdown or the drafting of her resignation speech.
I thought the Tory MPs kicked him out because he lied to his own team, his cabinet and his MPs about what he knew about sex pest Tory whip Christopher Pincher. In fact he got multiple cabinet members to lie on his behalf until he ‘remembered’ just as it became clear that there was documentary evidence to prove that he had been told about specific instances of harassment in 2019. I think this was a ‘straw that broke the camel’s back’ moment. I’m pretty sure though that, like Goldie and possibly you, large sections of the electorate will convince themselves that he never lied, his misdemeanours were minor and ‘just Boris being Boris’ and we would be better off with him back in charge. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I suspect that he is enjoying being paid lots of cash for speaking engagements and that his wife might not want him back in number 10. Have to say that Mordaunt, batting on a nightmare wicket, is doing a decent job of defending the pretty indefensible. Bowling not of the highest quality mind. She has no ammunition (sorry for the mixed metaphor) at all but is at least staying calm and collected. Almost as if it’s a job interview…..
In July, Johnson spent several days denying that he was aware firstly of any past general allegations about the behaviour of Chris Pincher, then, as that became less tenable, denying any knowledge of specific instances of sexual harassment. He got several cabinet ministers and other members of the government to repeat this in media interviews. Simon Macdonald, former Permanent Secretary at at the Foreign Office, said that Johnson had been told about specific instances of Christopher Pincher’s behaviour. He said this on Radio 4. Rather than take MacDonald to court, or accuse him of lying, Johnson then admitted that he had been briefed on this. And the Tory MPs sacked him as a result. The ones who were conned into lying on his behalf were especially pissed off. Doubtless a forgivable slip of the memory for his fanboys, but a ****ing great big lie to the rest of us. Though I am aware that you like a strictly legal definition of things in these matters, and would probably like a court judgement before reluctantly conceding that Johnson is a liar. This is just one example of course. He’s a pathological liar, he lies when he doesn’t have to. He even lied about his height.
Yeah I don’t really know why I wasted my time on it. Perhaps I was just slack jawed and stunned at the original assertion. Anyway, the fix is in “a bit of cake…blah blah….just Boris being Boris…..blah blah…..bit of exaggeration …blah blah” Rachel Reeves having a pop at Hunt, but he’s pretty Teflon at the moment. Truss has managed to finish her urgent business and turn up to hear what her new boss has to say. Whoops she’s gone again now, before he’s finished. Mordaunt left at the same time, probably explaining to Truss what exactly she wants in return for the last hour of defending the witless.
