I paid £173 this week to HMRC in tax and national insurance. It is good to know that our "government" is going to take that money and "help" to reduce the tax people who earn more than ten times more than myself pay. Government BY the rich FOR the rich. :steam:

Those who aren't really in that bracket, but aspire to be, will see this an 'encouragement' so go along with it all.

Most will never reach that level but can still believe they're part of the upper echelons by default.

They don't believe the 'lower orders' should be helped ... they should get on their bikes and help themselves.

All a bit sad but Thatcher taught the country how to be selfish and the lessons are well learned.

We no longer have a society, it's every man for himself.

I find it all a bit sad but it's carved in stone now tbh.

It looks as though the far right in Italy are about to win the election there. This comes a week after the right gained power in Sweden. It seems very clear that there is a rise in nationalism across the world at this time with immigration and identity politics being major factors in how people vote.

It makes me wonder what the correct approach is for the left. Should you always stand by your principles and voice your disagreements, even if it means you never gain power? Or is it more practical to accept some narratives of the right in order to get power and do some good?

If certain parts of the left sang the national anthem at their conference without complaining about it, admit that immigration is a situation that needs fixing (not kicking everyone out or anything like that) and just stopped talking about Brexit and social/identity injustices, they'd be a lot more palatable to those not currently inclined to vote for them.

Are they betraying their core support and their own principles by doing this or is it acceptable if it means they could spend 5 years in power doing good in a number of other ways?

As I've said previously, I think the vast majority of people in this country believe in fairness and are not racist, homophobic, sexist, transphobic, xenophobic. They are the silent majority who just want a sensible, centrist option but don't voice an opinion because they don't want to get dragged into an argument with either left or right.

... she's either getting a bit moist or she's nicked the Turin Shroud and turned it into a skirt <laugh>

Liz is 'f*****' - former minister claims letters of no confidence already being submitted against the PM
The disquiet with Conservative MPs over the mini-budget is growing.

One Tory MP who served as a minister under Boris Johnson has told Sky News: "Liz is f*****."

"She is taking on markets and the Bank of England.

"Her, Kwasi, Philp and Simon [Clarke] are playing A-level economics with people's lives. You cannot have monetary policy and fiscal policy at loggerheads. Something has to give."

The source also claimed moves to trigger a vote of no confidence in Ms Truss's leadership were already underway:

"They are already putting letters in as think she will crash the economy. The tax cuts don’t matter as all noise anyway - mainly reversing back to the status quo this year.

"The issue is government fiscal policy is opposite to Bank of England monetary policy - so they are fighting each other. What Kwasi gives, the Bank takes away."

Another Tory MP told Sky's Rob Powell that Friday's announcement had been a "s***show".

The MP said they weren’t aware of any coordinated plan to vote down government legislation or take other action to show concern, but added they would not rule out something happening given the events of the last few days.
