We could have a front three of Nicolas Pepe, Tino Werner, and Aaron Aardvark.

Can we have some kind of threshold for minimum level of source ? Perhaps starting with someone who can use grammar. That first paragraph is a horror show

Funny things can happen, especially in a year when you have a World Cup in the Winter and certain players will be getting minimal game time :emoticon-0102-bigsm

It will be interesting to see what happens with Cucurella now. Will he knuckle down and get back into it at Brighton or will he kick up a stink? He's only been at Brighton for 1 season, but Man City aren't going to wait for him until next summer...they will buy someone else in instead and he'll have lost his chance. Are Brighton doing the right thing here by standing their ground? And refusing to lose a player thats only been there for one season. Or are they going to damage their reputation to potential future signings who have their eyes further up the football ladder than Brighton?

Although I’d be annoyed if it was us, I think they are making a mistake here. Why do promising players join clubs like Brighton ? So they are in the shop window in case a top club wants to sign them. Refusing to sell to the champions of England is not a good message

It's a difficult one because we'd all be pretty pissed off if a player came in to Saints, had one good season and put in a transfer request. We would also feel like theres no way we should allow them to leave given the length of contract etc. for anything but top dollar. But it's not that simple unfortunately, particularly for clubs like Brighton and ourselves who realistically are only ever going to be stepping stone clubs for top talent.

Yes and no. If we were in Brighton's shoes there's no way we would accept 30mill for Cucurella when he has 4 years left on his contract. But refusing to negotiate is a mistake.

I disagree, obviously he’s not going to stay long but 1 season? May as well be a loan. It shouldn’t deter new signings, unless they have the intention of leaving at the first chance.

Exactly. The option from Man City isn’t “30m or nothing”.

I guess Brighton are pissed that Cucurella wants out after only a year. Hence the hardball tactic. But like you say, this may discourage more Cucurella type players from signing down the line.

This is the point - they are jeopardising their stepping stone status by refusing to actually be a stepping stone

You could argue that was why we had a problem after van dijk. Although we were clearly a stepping stone to those who came in - they were just bad buys

Also - your described order of events is not what happened. He put in a transfer request after they rejected and offer and said they would refuse to negotiate. That is different. I’d argue we wouldn’t be getting angry over the same thing because we’d negotiate and the player would go for a mid point between the two valuations. We’d be annoyed about that - sure. But we wouldn’t force our players to submit a transfer request (any more). We’ve learnt. Brighton haven’t as they have basically had one good season in the last couple of decades and now the vultures are starting to appear

He wants out because a top club want him. The champions no less. Playing in the champions league under one of the most highly regarded managers of this generation. Who is his compatriot no less

I feel if this was Pep and Barca rather than Pep and Man City this wouldn’t even be a discussion.

All this could lead to is similar players not joining or demanding release clauses for champions league clubs. Which Brighton sound like they will not offer based on how they seem to operate

I’d heard that Dunk also wanted to leave and they were blocking that as well. Maybe just until they got a replacement? And they haven’t been very active yet
