We have no idea who wanted Defoe, there were also rumours that Speakman didn't want him. They seem to keep transfers very quiet until they are done or nearly done, which shows they go about it the right way. Would rather wait till end of window for transfers if it means getting the right players in
if speakman didn't want defoe surely he's been vindicated since defoe has been shown to be a fraud ?
nobody wanted him the first time around but were desperate to get rid of altidore and defoe was the deal breaker
luckily for defoe he scored a goal that beat Newcastle and entered folklore
but when it all cools down defoes a arsehole who ****ed off and left us in **** at the time (since didn't matter)
so in a nutshell I hope sky sack him and he gets aids

I thought Winchester played okay at RB last season... and scored a couple of goals

He’s absolutely hopeless as RB. Looked ok when we were playing ****e teams who didn’t attack us at all. As soon as anyone came to play they focused his side of the pitch and beat him time and time again. Huggins would be our first choice and I reckon he’ll be a quality player but he’s not fit. Winchester, Gooch and O’nein will get tortured by decent wingers in this division.

?? He didn’t “leave us”. His contract was cancelled due to us being relegated. Did the club offer him new terms? We don’t know. If they didn’t then why is he the arsehole? What he did second time around was out of order. I wanted him first time around too and know a lot that did.

hHe did a lot more than “score past Newcastle” too. On and off the pitch

3 players i like in all honesty but i have to agree, none are defenders and all struggled at times with league 1, they will be shown up in the championship...as an emergency 'stand in' for the odd game then maybe ok but we do not want them starting at the back on a regular basis and i doubt they want to either.

Huggins wont play much and Winchester will get sold. If we sign a rb like patterson on loan then hume will go out on loan.

Patterson 100% improves us so its a no brainer to enquire about him if he is available
That's the main thing mate, we may not have known he was going to become available, the club may have been happy with the RB options we had but when a player becomes available especially on loan that would really improve our side then you have to take the option.
Especially considering we don't know how long huggins is out, so Hume is actually our only natural RB

Must say, the number 1 priority is a right back. If we put out a starting line up, we don't have one without dipping into the u23s. Look at forest last year, had that Spence. We can't be too half with Hume or midfielders

To be fair, Defoe had a clause in his contract allowing him to leave on a free if we got relegated. Not sure which idiot agreed to that, but he could have decided to stay with us and bring us back up....

I don't have an issue with him leaving at all, but let's be clear - he did have the option to stay if he wanted to (although the club would have probably forced him out like they did to Pickford)

You're bang on.

I can't quite begrudge him leaving the first time around. It was his last big chance in the PL and on bloody good money aswell.

I am however pretty peeved with the way he just sacked it off for us most recently though.

Initially I was a it pissed off and felt he'd left us in the lurch, but if we're being honest with ourselves he wasn't anywhere close to being the player we knew and loved. I think I'd have been more pissed off if he'd just taken the money and sat on the bench for 3 months, contributing v.little

Defoe done the honourable thing second time and he walked away. He wasn't any help to the cause, only a hindrance. We could see he was finished and he obviously realised this for himself.

Defoe is a guy who played at right back long enough to help us in our plight and although obviously unhappy he got his head down and got on with it. I remember him in tears during the game against Newcastle and the way he took young Bradley to his heart.

So, I disagree with the comments questioning his commitment to Sunderland. He's a good egg and it just didn't work out for him second time around.

Sounds like he is off to Preston, had my doubts over him coming here since inklings started coming out about spurs wanting him to start every week which just wouldn’t happen here, wonder why the Simms rumours started

We really do need a striker. We’re an injury away to Stewart from playing the likes of Jack Clarke & Jack Diamond up front.

Yep and Stewart hasn't even been tested at a level this high.

I'd like us to go for Cameron Archer and an experienced championship striker.

Am I in the minority who thinks we should be aiming in getting a striker who is BETTER than, or at least equal to Stewart? And NOT relying on him being our first choice striker?
I agree mate. Genuine competition at the least and ideally a track record of performance at the same or a similar level

I heard that his contract was done the second we were relegated. No option to stay. The clause in his contract was that he became a free agent. Not that he could choose whether he was a free agent. In which case the club were wholly to blame at both ends of the debacle
