Idk how true it is but Bowen was apparently £18 mil upfront + £7 mil in add-ons. If true, not sure how it makes KLP our record outgoing if it’s £16 mil + £4 mil in add-ons.

Regardless, Bowen got double-figures in three consecutive Championship seasons for us before getting his big-money move. KLP has had one. When you compare the two, either West Ham underpaid or Brentford overpaid, and I definitely lean towards it being the latter even with inflation taken into account. A deal reaching £20 mil for a player with one decent season in the Championship is really good business by us.

I think I agree, but you might want to switch underpaid and overpaid around for the post to make sense <laugh>

Also, upfront and add-on fees aside, do we know if we have a sell-on fee and what percentage it is?

If we were the ones buying, having survived our first Prem season, would we think 20m was value for a single good season in the championship?

6 year deal, investing in potential etc would probably swing it for me.

But by no means do I think Brentford have underpaid.

Everyone is talking about what is to be paid upfront. I suspect it was more about what was guaranteed and what was realistic with the add ons. In reality it could be 16 mill over 5 years and 2 mill if he wins the prem golden boot and 2 mill if brentford win the league. Or it could be 16 mill in a 1er then 4 million after 10 starts. I suspect the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Most transfer fees are structured over the length of a players contract anyway so it’s pretty unusual to get any guaranteed fee all in one hit.
