Anyone experiencing manufacturer recalls for their vehicles? Had three recently - one each for my wife's and her sister's cars, and one for mine.

Got my X5 sorted yesterday. Had to chose a BMW dealer to take it to, and being in Porthcawl I'm bang in the middle of two options - Sytner dealerships in Cardiff and Swansea, about the same distance to each. Chose the Swansea option (sorry about that <laugh>) mainly because I've been there before over the years (it was Trainers before Sytner bought it) and have good experiences - except for the cost <doh>.

Apparently there was a cautionary safety recall on my X5 regarding the EGR whatever that is. No indication of any problem but booked it in over the phone for a check. Because they might need it for the day, they arranged an FOC loan car to get back home and return later - a nice brand new 330e demonstrator. Not driven a hybrid car before - very impressive I must say.

During the day they did a complete vehicle "health check" and sent a video to my phone of the technician checking the wheels, tyres, discs and pads. Everything was done FOC. There was no problem with the recall reason but they changed the EGR cooler as a precaution anyway.

Picked up the car, was handed the paperwork and saw the bottom line. Nothing for me, but the cost charged to BMW for the EGR cooler was £604 - glad I didn't have to pay that.

Didn't understand most of that Sparkey (my failing, not yours).
The only cars I've ever bought were manufactured by Lesney. Never had any recalls.
And with that constructive contribution,<doh> I'll leave this thread to those who know what they're talking about.

Just hoping to elicit some conversation on here clingo.<ok>

I must admit that apart from looking in occasionally purely in my "mod capacity" to help any posters, I've stayed away in the main because of the dearth of activity.

Must admit I also had quite a few Dinky and Corgi cars - and as you say, never had one recall.

There are some very serious posters on the wurzel board I'll have you know.

They know all about Immigration, Boris, Rwanda, BLM, Transgender, Ukraine etc and discuss the subjects to death.

I posted across there on oned of the endlessly boring threads "roll on the football" - it didn't go down too well with some of them.....<laugh>

I've had a Toyota Self Charging CH-R Hybrid for 2 years. Nice car, build standard slightly below the Hondas I had for the previous 17 years but Honda weren't doing hybrids in my price range when I wanted to change.

Just arrived in Poole for a week down here, while going to see Queen and Adam Lambert at the O2 on Tuesday with my daughter and son in law. Tickets booked Christmas 2019 then covid postponed for 2 years.

Got 66mpg over the 130 mile drive but used to get 70+ from my previous Honds diesels.

Toyota have just brought out an all electric model with top of the range getting up to 307 miles between charges. A little on the expensive side. Hope they bring out a less costly CH-R all electric when I come to change mine in 12 months.

BT also drives a CH-R. He was persuaded to change from his Honda SUV bus last year.

That should give Masky something to speculate over.

Had BMW's for nearly 40 years - my last non BMW was a Rover 3500 V8 SDI in metallic BRG back in the early 80's.

Before aspiring to the X5 which I've had now for 4 years (is it that long? <doh>), had a 550i Touring 4.8 litre beast for nearly 10 years - fantastic machine even if somewhat non eco friendly. I honestly wouldn't change marque now.

On the recall front, the wife drives a Merc C class (sorry Hilts <laugh>) and her sister a new Yaris - both have had recalls this past year over potential airbag inflator issues.

Recalls aren't just brand driven - they're policed, monitored and controlled by the DVSA. The MV manufacturers are responsible for pursuing the current vehicle owners even if they've changed hands since first purchased - I think Fiestas are exempt though........<laugh><laugh>

On that note, I must change my X5 shortly for an X5 45E hybrid and get back on the Wurzel board to tell them all about it...........<laugh><laugh>

I had a recall on my Nissan Almera Tino a few years back.
Can't remember what the possible issue was but the garage I had to take it to was in a right sh##y part of Bristol near Stapleton Road.

No issues with it but when I collected it some plank had left his crisp packet in my passenger footwell, so I can only assume he had lunch sat in my car!!!

The car was hideous to look at but spacious as hell and really comfy... Being an automatic too it was like driving while sat on your sofa.

Traded it in for a massive £500 against a Honda Civic once the fuel filler pipe had corroded and was leaking.
Didn't even realise until some woman at Morrisons fuel station noticed it and pointed out that I had "liquid" dripping from my car as I was filling up.

Good job I don't still have it. It'd be like pouring tenners down the drain with the price of fuel nowadays.

Had a few recalls over the years. Never anything major.
The one that wasn't recalled was the biggie.
Aparently the recall against chasis number range. They know they'll miss some but accept the risk.
I never had a recall but suffered the failure they were trying to avoid.
A grease nipple onto the timing chain (only one engine type for the vehicle had a chain, the rest belts) used to block meaning the chain dried out, overheated and snapped, as mine did, trashing the engine.
Nice AA man pointed out it was a known fault and to contact a dealer, which I did. The engine was replaced.

Just a quick recap on this thread. Didn't have much time to look in here yesterday - wasted another day repeating the recall.

Got a phone call from BMW's UK head office last week to say they'd like to replace the replacement I'd had fitted in the recall of a few weeks back - WTF! <doh>

Though there was nothing wrong with the FOC £600 replacement I'd just had done, BMW had issued upgraded high temperature EGR coolers and they'd like to fit one to my vehicle. Two trips again - one to drop off and pick up the FOC loan vehicle for the day, and again down there in the afternoon to collect mine.

Bonus? A full Vehicle Healthcheck, handwash and valet - even blackwalled the tyres. Downside? Two more trips to Jackland.
 
I dislike BMWs and found them to be a bad driver experience.
I did own an Audi A3 S-line cabrio when I lived in Germany. An awesome motor. I did test drive a BMW at the same time and the Audi was far superior in every way. No recalls either.
I don’t have any need for a car these days, except for the pooch. So, I now have a low-mileage 10 year old Focus. Given the amount of car thefts in Lithuania I’d say it’s a safer option.

To each his own Taff - maybe it's just a "brand loyalty" thing. My elder brother before he passed would drive nothing other than Audis.

My neighbour works for an Audi dealership and brings all manner of "demo" cars home. Nice looking and quality motors. Had a go in a few of them and was usually quite impressed.

However, one day he arrived home in a Q7 which I reckon is about the "opposition" level for the X5. Had a go and wasn't that impressed - the X5 (for me) is by far the better vehicle. There you go. <ok>
 
FFB & Sparkey. As you say, everyone to their own. As for the 4x4 experience, I’m old school with the series 3 Land Rover. A better off-roader you’ll never find (IMO) I have driven off-road with many in places like Kenya, Belize, and Bosnia to mention a few.
I have driven a few of the more modern 4x4 and they are luxury compared to the series 3 but I still love it.
