Just thought I would throw this in. I've just turned 76, and have been playing at a local cheap course for a few years, twice a week, only 9 holes and walk, which is difficult in this heat (regularly 35-38 deg C) Two of the holes you have to drive over water, which I was able to manage easily a few months ago, but now I struggle, but have to admit my drivers are nearly as old as me (just kidding, but they must be 20 years old now). So my question is, can the drivers lose power? I've just ordered a Ping G425, because I used my other drivers Ping G15 and G20 many many times over the years, not to mention hours and hours at the driving range. Will the new driver give me a bit more distance? Or should I start playing from the red tees?

According to most reviews, there has hardly been any improvement in driver technology in the past 15 years or so.

Golf lessons and gym workout also try using a pro vi or similar. Ball technology has improved.

Mind is this carbonwood any good?

I believe they do lose something over time mate. There is a saying that a club can go a bit dead. It, as far I understand it, means the face of the club has just degraded over time, and perhaps has become a little sunken. I suppose you keep hitting something with force over time it will lose a little shape right? I think when that happens it feels a bit flat and less 'zingy' off the club, if that makes sense. Irons seem to last longer, which I suspect is a result of less use over time, and less full force impact. It is probably also why we get a 'feel' for a putter that never really leaves us. I reckon you will get more distance from your new driver.

Well I'm 78 and I play from parts of the course I didn't know existed a few years ago. Every par 4 is a par 5 + nowadays.
    I don't blame my clubs .
I also find they have extended the length of the course and steepened every hill.

Whilst I do enjoy the actual golf at Augusta..

I dislike the way they try very hard to make it special and sort of invent tradition as they go along. Patrons etc

Also of course they at one time did not have any Jewish, women or Blacks as members.

I agree mate, they have failed to be very progressive as a club at all. Mind you it has only been in the last 3 or 4 years that that last all male courses in this country have gone. I do still think the institution of Augusta National has a sour taste.

Some of the traditions of the place I do like though. They dont have rough, they have a second cut <laugh> no mobile phones and every has to use a payphone. Max 4 mins adverts per hour of adverts. Caddies must wear the local uniform. All these little things to me make it a bit special. Just like our Open has little quirks that make it a wonderful thing.

Overall I love the drama of the back 9 and the colours, even if the lakes a full of dye for tv

Yes dye in the water and flowers brought out from greenhouses etc.

I chatted once with a green keeper from England who went out to Augusta to prepare it for the Masters. Load of green keepers went, none got paid as such, but their flights and accommodation was paid for. Plus they got quite a good 'party bag' to take away worth around £3,000 or so.

The number of keepers working was near 1,000 apparently.

Shame he double bogeyed the 18th, 6 under would have been a cracking start

They should do something about the odds to make it more interesting in golf. Too many players at moment are in decent form and could win. Not like footy.

Like I said I'm not much if a gambler but looking at the odds prior to the start of the tournament there were a bucket load of players under 20/1.

Westwood was 125/1 so threw a couple of quid each way on him. He generally plays well in the Majors. It keeps it interesting.

I'll give you my 2 cents... I bought a new driver recently and had a senior shaft fitted...makes a huge difference, on average its increased my drives 15/20 yards
