Brian Thomas introduced me to him in the Players’ bar at Cardiff Arms Park after Cardiff v Neath in 1997 - just after the Lions’ squad for that year’s tour to South Africa had been announced. I also recall that there was a 30 minutes TV programme on about him several years ago - must admit that I thought that he cut a sorry figure…..
I can totally understand him being overwhelmed with the adulation whilst playing but then, on reflection years later, having the sense of regret at retiring early. A no win situation unfortunately.
To be honest, he cut a sorry figure not so much for regretting retiring early - in fact I don’t recall him ever saying that - it was more, for me, the fact that he had separated from his wife, lived alone in a ‘pokey’ flat, and how shall I put this, seemed to like a drink …
