Its my lasses 40th birthday next month and ive decided to pop the question midway though our night out.
Can anybody recommend a nice location to do it which would be fairly private?

I never usually give anyone advice about anything but, as you've asked.

I'd avoid proposing during a night out as it might be seen as being prompted by alcohol. Better to do it in the late afternoon when you usually feel content but excited about the night out. I'd suggest an afternoon tea at Betty's which is an absolute delight. It may not be your 'cup of tea', if you'll pardon the pun, but it's a lovely sophisticated place that women love. There's a mirror there, from WW2, that's quite romantic and the perfect place to propose. Speak to them and say what you're 'proposing', they'll make it really special for you ... congratulations in advance mate.

And if you don't fancy that I'd suggest one of the lovely side chapels in York Minster, she would never forget that and would absolutely love telling everyone how romantic you were.

Walk along the city walls might be nice.

Or down the shambles at night.

Pretty special place to do it.

There used to be some lovely little beer gardens on the river but I can't for the life of me remember what area they were in. I was an early teen when I stopped living there.

Wiggington where I lived had a lovely duckpond with a weeping willow hanging over it. But no one goes out there.

I proposed in York Minster during the All Saints and All Souls day. They had a spiral of candles in the Chapter House which is essentially a side chapel like Smug suggests. You could light a candle or 2 for those you've loved and lost and I knew the Mrs would light 1 each for her Dad and Grandmother and this was my way of having them involved when they naturally couldn't be. She absolutely loved it, cried a little and eventually said yes, thank fook <laugh>

Link below explains it better than me haha and has a pic of the spiral of candles which looks stunning as well.

Congratulations @Teessidemackem mate and whatever you do I'm sure it'll be a moment to remember for the 2 of you.

Congratulations mate, I've been to York a few times and it's been rammed every time so finding some privacy might be difficult.

The Museum gardens are pretty and big enough that you'd be able to find yourself a bit of space. Could stop off there in between bars/restaurants/whatever you've got planned.

    congrats and good luck marra...

my advice is make sure both mobiles are fully charged to make sure you can both catch the moment from a personal view and grab a passer by to film it while you re-enact it for social media, in fact, if you get her friends involved you could start a new trend and have a surprise 'engagement shower' or 'engangement reveal' with lots of coloured balloons...

...actually no, scratch that...just go the 'old fashioned way' and have a most excellent private moment together.

Speaking as a member of the fairer sex, I think Smugs idea is brilliant, then go out for drink/meal on night to celebrate.

During the day on the walls with the minster in the background would be a decent place methinks, but Smug's suggestion is a bloody good un. Hope it all goes well tees.

Just over the road from Hilton Hotel there's Cliffords Tower which is on top of a hill, so doesn't get swamped with passers by. Lovely outdoor location and very close to bars and restaurants when you want to celebrate. Best of luck mate!
