realistically yeh - although he can sign whenever as not under contract. but if he's not coming we'll need to know before then.

I more meant I doubt we have given him a deadline yet. More likely if we don't have an answer early next week we may then want to push. But I doubt the club are being too demanding on timings right now?

  2. Yep,saw some of the comments made towards you on there recently, which I know were completely wrong.
As you say, there are some good lads on there, but, sadly they're heavily outnumbered.
Much prefer this place, particularly with genuine lads like yourself on here.

  3. Yes,you're right, sorry mate, didn't express myself very well. I was thinking of JD as a "special" addition, with maybe a coaching role, and, perhaps not a run of the mill, sign on Friday,in the team on Saturday kind of signing,if you get what I mean. But,as you suggest,we need another striker ready to go alongside Rosco,so,we do need to know asap.

The board has changed massively in the last 5 or 6 years. Old timers like me who were there at the start (around the time of the 2002 World Cup) remember daft things like caption competitions, fish puns and changing our avatars to match Blep's one weekend. There was always a bit of angst and debate about the club and we seemed to get our fair shares on WUM Mags on there but it was largely good natured. Sadly that place no longer exists and its' just an extension of the abusive environment harvested by Social Media. No opinion is allowed without a) proof, b) being rattled and c) threats of physical harm.

Maybe it's the average age of the users (which I assume is teens/early 20s) which seems so alien to a bloke like me in his mid-40s, maybe it's the general change in cluture where everyone seems to be aggressive towards each other through the anonymity of the internet.

Whatever it is, my online life has been far simpler since I came over here and left that place behind.

Mad Robert over the road reckons we’ve ‘bottled it’ and Defoe is due in Oxford tonight.

  8. Good post. Totally agree with what you say....I joined in 2005. I'm nearly 70 now,so this internet anonymity thing is not really my culture....I try to be considerate to everyone. I grew up in Consett and,in my day,if you had a beef with someone, you sorted it out round the back!:emoticon-0116-evilg

the bloke is a total plant pot anyway so I’d take it with a pinch of salt anyway.

the meltdown over there will be unbearable if he doesn’t sign for us though.

Should also add I meant "old timer" in so much as I'd been on that board 20 years

He’s doing a smashing job of riling people up over this.

Ultimately Defoe probably could do a job for us for 6 months but he hardly fits the pattern of our previous signings.

If he doesn’t come I'm not spitting my dummy out.

Yeah. Tend to agree. The romantic side of things has him coming back to get us over the line before retiring and passing on the torch. In reality he signs for Oxford, we all get pissed off that we've been "beaten" to the signing of a 39yo by an inferior team......but we get promoted anyway :emoticon-0140-rofl:

you get some very informative posters on the other site, i never actually 'fully left' and still pop in now and then, even dropping the odd post in...not even sure when i first joined up but most likely late 90's, first account got banned yet mods could not tell me why, it was possibly also around then i noticed a change in the way things were posted, some sorted themselves into little groups and would turn a decent thread into their own little chat room which in turn caused new threads to be created on the same subject as the original went further off topic, then a good post would begin and several (at times) would then start a new thread on the same topic with slightly different wording or would see the general reaction on a topic and start a new thread knowing they were taking 'the popular stance' and guaranteed likes.

i think the worst part were those who took an 'angry' approach to everything, some vicious replies started and the rest of the group leapt in to back them up/defend them, i am sure they had their own little whatsapp group or something but they were never slow to ridicule people and if they realised the lad was not one for confrontation they would follow him around the threads constantly having a go at him...we lost a good few decent posters that way.

i also think the way the club is working now is upsetting a few, very little concrete info is being leaked and it seems some do not like it, especially transfers as realistically we know feck all until the scarf pic emerges...IF the defoe story has any chance of happening we will soon find out and as a professional footballer he is doing the right thing by exploring his options in which case we might not be the best option for him right now and we need to accept his choice, not blame LJ or the recruitment team as i fully believe if they really did not want him here it would never have reached the 'talks' stage.
