I watched, and thoroughly enjoyed again, the very funny 'Love thy Neighbour' series recently (borrowed) and it's a pity that it'll never be shown on telly again 'cos that was proper humour taken in the right spirit . . . . taking the mickey out of that fella, Ray Cism :emoticon-0105-wink:

Depressing that we will never see the likes of this, OFAH, Fawlty Towers etc nowadays due to the snowflake/PC brigade like ! Even more depressing when they still show it on TV now but they dumb it down so as not to offend.

Phoenix Nights/Max and Paddy is probably the last thing I can recall of recent times to even come close....i have mates who haven't even seen either of these two shows FFS.

Couldnt get away with Fawlty Towers like. Neither found it funny or entertaining. Found it annoying more than owt else.

OFAH was genius up until the wives/girlfriends entered the scene (Excl. A Royal Flush which was too cringey and where Del was a right **** and not a lovable rogue). It was then good up till Jolly Boys Outing. Passable up till the they won their millions (Excl. the Peckham Spring episode, Awful). The less said about the last 3 the better, other than embarrassing crap. Compare them episodes to the earlier ones, you'd think they'd been written and performed by totally different people. Lazily written and performed because they all just wanted the money. Ideally they should have had the Jolly Boys Outing then an episode where they become millionaires, then ended it there and then and not tarnished it all with the mediocity/awfulness that it become.

First series, you forgot that they were acting. Which is something because I understand that the majority of them weren't experienced actors.

That's true and the 'situation' was so mundane it relied on the characters for the laughs and pathos. They also grew and developed as people which was quite subtle and cleverly done.

I thought OFAH was watchable but never found it as engaging as many did. I can't watch it at all these days, it just seems so forced and everyone is acting their heads off. It's so dated now I think people must watch it out of nostalgia, the characters never grew as the episodes traipsed along.

First series Wayne was good with money and saved.
Second series Wayne says has never been good with money. Slight changes.

Ahhhh bollocks......ahhhh double bollocks !!!

Has to be (along with OFAH) my all time favourite show but AP just tips it on account of it being mainly full of characters from the North East. I remember watching it as a kid and found it hilarious then but it wasn't until you watch it again and again as an adult that you appreciate how topical it was of the state of the country back then with people having to seek employment abroad etc and it pretty much nailed it like. Every character in Series 1 & 2 was absolutely perfect for me, from Dagmar, Magowan, Herr Grimwald and Ulrich to Ali Fraser and his Missus, Arthur Pringle and even a one off appearance of a ridiculously young Ray Winstone!

The later series weren't a patch on 1 and 2 but I still enjoyed them and have watched them numerous times over the years. My kids have watched them and quite enjoyed them (not as much as they enjoy OFAH funnily enough), quite sad to think that in a generation or two's time that nobody will probably have heard of this show or the main people from it etc.

I was shocked to find out the old crone in a electric disability scooter was on AP.

Anyone remember which one for ten points without Google ? :D

Have you seen "still game" ?
One of the best comedies of recent times.

Donald the swinger is the Scottish journalist that's hounding them on the beach.

I was tarmacing for a while in the eighties. (Boys from the black stuff <laugh> Thatcher's fooked Britain, scratchin round for work :( )

We were in a club on a Friday afternoon having a few beers after graft, it was a club favoured by travellers. They used to sing irish songs a lot.

This Alfie who worked with us, daft bugger, funny lad. Stood up and sang an Irish song with one of the sweetest voices I've ever heard.

We we're all fookin gobsmacked.
The gypsies were slapping their kids if they made a sound whilst he was singing and gave him a standing ovation afterwards <laugh>

Ha ha, forgot about him! I still laugh at the fact that I hated Herr Grumwald in the show but not cos he was **** in the show but cos he was an even bigger **** as Mr Bronson in Grange Hill….so much so that poor old Danny Kendal killed himself!

Had to put that cowboys episode on this morning for a laugh….I forgot about that knob end architect Howard that Ally Fraser hired….Oz keeps calling him hedgehog <laugh><laugh>

Haha, "Get the percolator on". haha.

cheers lads... now watching it all again.

was it really such an amateurish start as it looks now?
Absolutely but that’s part of the genius of it. I would imagine for most of them (without having to look this up) this would have been their first gig. Must have been such a ****ing laugh filming it like!

well we know bomber was a wrestler afore this, the rest may have (mainly) had a few 'bit parts' and i think it has already been said how the characters 'grow' as the series goes on, if it was deliberate it was a brilliant idea as it gives the feeling of 'being there'

Jimmy nail wasn't even an actor. His real life sister (Norma in awp/dennis' sister), got the part of Norma, and having seen the script, recommend they speak to her brother for the part of Oz.
The clothes Oz wears in series 1 were his own....they had to "buy" them off him....something to do with actors union or summit like that.
