I loved it when it was totally believable but it went on too long, as these shows sometimes do, and the tension went.

Big characters can't sustain too much exposure because they inevitably become caricatures of themselves.

Strangely it now seems more dated than The Likely Lads which is sharper and simpler except for the film obviously.

My mam loved Auf Wiedersehen.
After she got alzheimers she watched it (1st 2 series) again & again, as did whoever was sitting with her. Even when she was unable to, virtually anything, she would react when a particularly memorable scene (Oz singing!) was about to occur.
So while I love the programme it may be a while before I watch it again.

You forget how quick they move as well. Episode 1 they are in Germany laying bricks. Nowadays it would be 2 episodes of back story and character acting.

Tempted to watch a bit this weekend after this thread. Would be a couple of manor episodes, including the one when Oz sings in the country pub. Not for the singing but think it was one of them scenes

Odd the same time I posted about the same episode as you mate.

Love the whole thing, every series and every episode. My favourite is the second series when they were at Thornley Manor. Best episode was when they found the porn video...

Get some on mate. I must say I'm a fan of the second series. After Gary died they had to re do a load of scenes. But still good.

When they're in Spain and Barry is choosing his best man and chooses all of them, You can see Oz crying, he said afterwards it was because Gary should have been in that scene, they said they would shoot it again but Jimmy Nail said he wanted it kept in. Check it out next time.

Ahhhh bollocks......ahhhh double bollocks !!!

Has to be (along with OFAH) my all time favourite show but AP just tips it on account of it being mainly full of characters from the North East. I remember watching it as a kid and found it hilarious then but it wasn't until you watch it again and again as an adult that you appreciate how topical it was of the state of the country back then with people having to seek employment abroad etc and it pretty much nailed it like. Every character in Series 1 & 2 was absolutely perfect for me, from Dagmar, Magowan, Herr Grimwald and Ulrich to Ali Fraser and his Missus, Arthur Pringle and even a one off appearance of a ridiculously young Ray Winstone!

The later series weren't a patch on 1 and 2 but I still enjoyed them and have watched them numerous times over the years. My kids have watched them and quite enjoyed them (not as much as they enjoy OFAH funnily enough), quite sad to think that in a generation or two's time that nobody will probably have heard of this show or the main people from it etc.

I'd totally forgotten they did more than the first two series, saw the transporter bridge series pop up on UK gold or some such, had forgotten watching it.
That was the third and last series was it?

Neville working in the Indian restaurant was hilarious

Nah, there was another series in Cuba.....you'll have to hunt that out and binge watch it at the weekend. Not a patch on 1 & 2 but more than watchable.

Depressing that we will never see the likes of this, OFAH, Fawlty Towers etc nowadays due to the snowflake/PC brigade like ! Even more depressing when they still show it on TV now but they dumb it down so as not to offend.

Phoenix Nights/Max and Paddy is probably the last thing I can recall of recent times to even come close....i have mates who haven't even seen either of these two shows FFS.
