He was 16 and played one episode as Ena Sharples's grandson. He also later played on stage as the Artful Dodger in a West End production of Oliver so you're right, he had some experience of acting. Mickey Dolenz left the elephants and was given a drum set.

So Davy Jones was entering the show biz arena when he got the Monkees part. Dolenz was a minor household name after appearing in Circus Boy that was broadcast on both sides of the Atlantic. Peter Tork was a hippy who knew Stephen Stills. When Stills was rejected for the Monkees, he recommended Tork who had the desired Scandinavian looks. Nesmith left the US Airforce and, after being given a guitar for a Christmas present, began singing and writing folk music, and won the Monkees audition.

Never watched it, but I believe it was based loosely on the Monkees.

The drummer of the British band The Wurzels has died in hospital after contracting Covid-19, a statement said.

Somerset musician John Morgan died at the age of 80 on Friday in Gloucester Royal Hospital.

The band's manager said he was their "oldest drummer in captivity" and had been performing with them since 1981 up until two weeks ago.

Band member Tommy Banner said: "We can't believe we shan't ever see you behind those drums again."

The band, which celebrates rural life in the West of England, rose to fame in the '70s with hits such as I Am A Cider Drinker and Combine Harvester.

The band said he will be missed
In an online tribute and announcement, Mr Banner said he will be missed.

"We thought you were indestructible," he wrote.

"With your sharp, quirky Forest wit - oh, you were also a great drummer, just like your hero, Charlie Watts.

"We are all in shock, Morgy had the driest of humour and the kindest of hearts and all are [sic] thoughts are with his family."

He said the band intended to continue but that Mr Morgan would "always be remembered and loved".

That's a sad one. Son of two brilliant and much loved comedians, Hattie Jacques and John Le Mesurier, I enjoyed his reminisces of a unconventional, colourful and disruptive childhood.
