I would see it as totally sensible and not strange at all.
Gives the manager some security. Gives some stability. And leaves the club with a liability that is never more than a year (compared to say the balance of a 3 year deal).
It is what I understand his deal to be.

Gives the manager some security is an understatement. It would guarantee him a year's full pay after he's sacked, no matter how long we waited to do it. That'd be absurd.

Yep, of course they have some such security built into their contracts! Perfectly normal. Hopefully though there's also clauses that reduce it if for example if the club is in a relegation place etc.

When a manager or player signs on, say a 3 or 5 year deal?

What exactly do you think that means?

There will be clauses in either the manager or clubs favour should a termination arise, but generally speaking you are guaranteeing payment for the length of that contract.

Yes, in a season that started late so was only the 18th game of the season. Of course it was an attrocious run of form but it's not as bad as you made out. There was no haste to prove you wrong.

The real question with the type of rolling contract that is the season by season rolling contract is when the option for a further year or the notice not to renew is called - and does the manager have any say in any extension

I cant think anyone would accept a contract that could run out at the end of every season and have no idea whether it was going to be extended until the season has ended - likewise I cannot think any manager would effectively sign up for life at the whim of the Allams extending each year - otherwise they would leave themselves open for paying compensation for breach of contract if they were ever to leave - as always with these things the devil will be in the detail
 
I’m sure it’s been said that they can sack terry if we are in the relegation places, not sure if it’s without compo or reduced
 
McCann reportedly saying the step up to the championship is bigger than the step up to the premier league. So why does he play an inexperienced 3 in midfield against up to 5 opponents. Doesnt make sense

I think he was talking about being a manager - I think he's admitting the step is too big for him and he can't reach the Championship level

Those are a fixed length though. We're talking here about one that never runs out, and still guarantee's him a year's pay for no work at the end.

But if you sak a manager on a 5 year deal, he gets the balance 5 years money for no work. A rolling year would never be more than just 1.

Yes but it limits the owners exposure to a max one year, so a compromise position.
