For me personally supporting Chelsea wasn't about success. I grew up in SW London/North Surrey where everyone supported Chelsea (including my mum and Godfather since the early 70s) - we finished 11th my first season. What was worse is throughout my early childhood we had to live through the success of Arsenal who dominated us in the league + the swathes of gloryhunting United fans you tend to find across the country who'd mock you for supporting your local team.
Granted we had the 1997 and 2000 FA Cup wins which were unbelievable at the time but aside from that all I knew was near-misses and abject failure until Abramovich took over.
The excitement of that first transfer window was unlike anything I've ever experienced as a fan, I feel differently to many in the sense that if any other fanbase can experience what I did then I'm happy for them (except Arsenal, Tottenham or West Ham).
The bitterness, fear and envy from the media and rival fans will only mould the NUFC fanbase together. Personally, I would far rather see good and honest loyal fans like NUFC and MCFC have success than the swathes of gloryhunters across the country who abandon their local teams to follow LFC and MUFC.
The North-West of England and London are going to have to get used to not having things their own way because Newcastle are here to stay and now have serious owners willing to maximise the potential of the club.
