British gas is probably one of the worst companies I've ever had the misfortune of dealing with and will undoubtedly have cost you a lot more over the long run ;)

I switched away from Octopus last year. They couldn't use the previous smart meter (and in home display) from British Gas and for over a year, kept promising to set up a new one. They never did so I went with SSE who sorted it out within a month.
Apart from that Octopus were good.

I use OVO and rate them highly. Used to get 5% interest if my account was in credit, so I used it like a savings account

I'm on oil here mate (Lincolnshire/East Midlands) and got a good deal with E-ON who've been very straightforward to deal with and reasonably priced throughout my time with them ( last two years). Penalties for leaving are reasonable too (I'm looking at moving house so didn't want to get hammered for early exit).

It can be a minefield at the best of times, let alone now when so many of the newer providers are disappearing so good luck.

Ill second that. I have been with them for 18 mths and got a good deal at the time and more money off for broadband, Unfortunately my contract is due up at xmas so looking for another. I have also heard Octopus are supposed to be quite good. It was on the news today that the comparison site are not running properly due to so many smaller companies going bust.

    Yeah
I’ve got smart meter and hive
    New boiler and full insulation
    Been with British gas forever
The price to change is really not worth the bother
Cause whoever I pick will just jump up higher again next year
Sometimes tie into deals and sometimes just pay whatever
If I thought it was worth chopping and changing I would of done it years ago
Baisically there all about the same save something one year loose it the next

What I don’t understand is why when gas comes through the same pipes and electricity through the same cable can dozens of companies have different prices. And how the **** can you have penalty clauses for finding someone cheaper through the same ****ing pipe. They’re all the same company split for tax purposes, robbing bastards.
And they try telling us it’s not The Illuminati who happen to be in cahoots with the lizard people living under Antarctica, of course it is, who do you think does the deal for the special moon watta. It’s a weird world we live in, nothing is as it seems. it’ll go mental when them up there come back for the pyramids they dropped off, the ****ing lunatics.
See you all on the 13th floor.

Thing is at the moment you're unlikely to find any good long term deals given the ridiculous current wholesale price of gas. You might be best off taking something were you're not committed for long, and look to change again when the market settles down.

It's called capitalism, easy money for spivs - buying something and selling it on for a higher price. Utilities should never have been privatised and definitely never sold to French and German companies.

Been with EDF for years. Nit the cheapest but not the dearest either.
Customer Service is very good, when ever I’ve had an issue or a question, they’ve done what you’d expect.
I do it all online which saves you more.

PS it was so easy to predict what has happened, the policy was massively flawed!!

Another vote for Octopus. And under the referral scheme, if I refer you we both get a £50 credit :emoticon-0105-wink:

I would personally avoid any of these small piddling suppliers, they may be a bit cheaper but when they go tits up (and they have been) you end up somewhere not of your choosing and could be in a similar position when they go tits up shortly after.

Go big 6 - they wont bankrupt you on a 2 bed property with two occupants anyway. Its not worth the messing about to save £20 a year or whatever.

    Ah too late :D

Problem with smart meters is they may not work with a different supplier so be careful. We signed up with the company off dragons den who keep a eye on things and every so often we receive notice that we are changing suppliers
