I like Shane Long, he seems like a good guy.

My mate Phil is also a good guy, I wouldn’t want him playing up front for Saints either. When he goes it will be with my thanks, but if we are honest he has never been particularly good

I don't think anyone is under the illusion that Long is any good. But then neither were Francis Benali or Maya Yoshida. Yet they have become club legends. They are just likeable guys with decent attitudes and values. Adam Lallana was incredibly skillful, one of our best players this century. But he turned out to be a bit of a twat. Ergo completely lost his potential legend status. Sometimes there's just more to it than simply being a good footballer.

When you're getting paid £60k per week you need to offer more than a willingness to chase defenders down. No one has ever disputed his work rate but the fact that the only good thing anyone can say about a player is that he works hard says it all.
Some of our signings have given a lot less

Thing with Long (sorry to get back to him), is that he is a total menace. Still.

However, to capitalise on that we need a Danny Ings or Graziano Pelle by his side. Long creates the chaos and menace and defenders just cannot defend it all so Ings and Pelle would score a hatful. Not saying they need Long by their side, but that is why he is there. He can also score a few, sometimes.

He also never gives up 'lost' causes and sometimes we have got a corner or throw etc out of this.

Southampton remain confident of adding two forward players to the squad, and there could also still be the possibility of another deal for a cheap deal academy player from a top side, similar to Tino Livramento’s transfer from Chelsea.”

Liam Delap?

Not for me, but each to their own. I couldn’t give a **** what they are like off the pitch (within reason of course). I only care if they are good on it.

I was thinking exactly the same thing yesterday. But Obafemi is not yet at the stage to take advantage

Liam Delap would be a very good signing. Some talk of Matthew Hoppe from Schalke too.

"Shane Long creates goals for others with his movement" is one of those things that might have been true at one point, but it really isn't true anymore. He played about 200 PL minutes last year, and Saints scored all of 2 goals with him on the pitch: a penalty from a handball, and a header from a corner. If defenders are terrified of Shane Long, they're doing an excellent job of hiding it.

Right, so he played a total of roughly two games last season.

And he is still the scapegoat? Bit unfair.
