    Weekender.jpg
This weekend it seems things are going to become clearer with regard to transfers. It seems Kleasson the keeper from Norwegian side Velerenga is flying in for his medical early next week. A deal has been a agreed which will total out at £1.6m. Its also starting to look as if we have made an agreement with Chelsea to loan Connor Gallagher, which I think is great business and although Palace and Newcastle wanted him it seems as if Orta has sold him on the Leeds project. Probably our new U23 player Lewis Bate will have had both clubs talking to make things a bit easier for us to get to Gallagher?

Looking at the way our U23 squad is shaping up, it seems a bit unbalanced right now, although it seems we are chasing 2 new additions from Celtic. 2 kids of 17yo one is supposed to be the next Van Dyke as we are short of a specialist CB since we sold Casey. The other kid is a left back......

    By my reckoning we have:
    • 2 keepers
    • 4 players who can play at CB but Cresswell and young Mullen specialists.
    • 12 players who can play midfield, who will be used in varying roles.
    • 3 wingers but suspect a couple of the midfielders could play wide.
    • 4 Full backs
    • 4 Centre Forwards.
We have 21 players who are classed as U23 players with 4 of those only 17yo. if we get the 2 Celtic kids that will be 6 at only 17yo.

On top of this we have 5 U23 players out on loan for the season, with another 6 who are either going out on loan or due to leave the club. Davies has just seen the club pull out of a deal with Bournemouth which could be because we are short on defenders for the 23s? or has Davies come back looking ready to be part of the 1st team squad? if we are short of defenders there is Huggins and Hosannah as well as Davies in this surplus group 6 kids?

Seems that the young Celtic kid is now following Leeds on his Insta account?
    COINCIDENCE?
It’s possible that Hjelde’s decision to follow Leeds is unrelated to the transfer speculation about a move to West Yorkshire.

But let’s be frank, it’s unlikely.

There’s no doubt that Celtic are a massive club but it’s clear that Orta and Marcelo Bielsa are building something very exciting with regards to the Under-23 side and a lot of players would love to be involved.

Aside from Bate, United have also added Sean McGurk and Amari Miller to the youth side this summer already, reinforcing that Orta is indeed in the market for teenage gems.

It’s good that Bogusz has gone out on loan and will be playing in a decent competitive league (although Club Ibiza sounds like an old Wham song <diva>)

    Future Leeds United star.

    excellent post Doc

the club has a clear focus on U23s going forward, with homegrown talent a must due to Brexit ... good thing is that any foreign youngsters in our Academy who make it to pro level in three years will qualify as "settled" and won't count towards foreign quota

can only admire Radz for his forward thinking, and Orta for his tireless work to help build the club ... I wouldn't be surprised if the crazy Spaniard stayed a Leeds forever, he loves the club, he gets what it means to be Leeds and he's passionate about helping to make us a powerful force in Europe

with the "Super Six" all struggling with huge debts, and the European Giants also wearing concrete boots at the minute, there is a genuine opportunity for Leeds to take a huge step forward and cement their place within the elite bracket

if only Bielsa would sign a five year contract, then it would be guaranteed ... oh well' let's enjoy the ride for now

    FORZA LEEDS!!!

Billy, this 3 year thing is new to me. Does it cover Leeds foreign players if they spend all their time on loan in a foreign country?

Wouldn't surprise me if they're using McKinstry to help sign this Celtic player. He's a Celtic fan himself & knows what both leagues have to offer, & specifically what Leeds can offer a young player. If he's that good, fingers, toes, arms, the lot all crossed. :D

Phil Hay now stating that Connor Galagher has been Leeds No1 target for midfield position and know home based will be more expensive than overseas, but Gallagher has done Championship seasons and now a full Prem season and still only 21yo

The rule has been in place since 2015, and for a non English/Welsh (different rules apply for Scottish and Northern Irish players) player to be classed as home grown, they must be registered with any clubs within the English or Welsh football associations for 3 years prior to reaching the age of 21. This doesn't have to be continuous, is not nationality related, and time played for other associations don't count.

Thus Andreas Christian is classed as a home grown player , whilst Eric Dier isn't, as between the ages of 15 -21 he was registered as a Sporting Club of Lisbon player and during that time, he spent one year with Everton's U18 team , prior to joining Spurs at the age of 20, thus meaning he was only registered as a player for 2 years, prior to reaching the age of 21.

When a club names their 25 man squad of over 21 players for the season, 8 of these must be home grown. Under 21 players don't need to be registered.

Someone like Mateusz Bogusz will have 2 years(not sure how half seasons are counted) of academy time with us (second half of 2018/19 season and whole of 2019/20 season). This is why sending him out on loan for last season and this season is ideal, for him to gain experience of first team football, as next season he will have to remain with the club to gain home grown status, and may have gained sufficient experience to make our first team squad.

There is a proposal that the rule be changed so that to be classed as home grown you must be registered with the club for the whole 3 years, between the ages of 15 and 18, the idea being that this will restrict the number of foreign players being classed as home grown, as the majority of the time, foreign players of that age will have likely been playing within their own nation for at least some of that period.

Thus players like Hector Bellerin, Alex Iwobi, Cesc Fabregas and Kasper Schmiechel would be classed a non home grown players under the proposed rule change

Cheers for that, Aski. So it's got nothing to do with who owns the players registration, it's where he plays his football, it seems. That might explain why some players we expected to go out on loan, didn't. Perhaps the club wanted them to complete their 3 years before playing in a foreign league.

An abstract thought - if you played for Leeds kids teams, could you qualify at 13, having played for the u10s, u12s, u14s etc., or is there a qualification starting age that must be observed?

Correct, it has to do with which football association they are registered to play in, not the club that overall holds the registration.

The academy status for home grown players only commences at the age of 15, as that is the earliest age that you are able to sign a youth contract.

Anyone under that age officially is not contracted to the club and was one of the reason that solidarity payments were introduced for transfers, to provide compensation for those clubs who helped developed players from the age of 12 onwards

Good shout Aski. Wondering where Leeds stand on the young winger we took in at 11yo and gave him schoolboy contract. Hes now 15yo and on his way to Man City as we agreed to let him go?

You will probably know better than me in this respect Doc, but my understanding is that anyone on a youth contract can sign for any other club, providing they pay a standardised fee set by the FA, which is based upon the length of time at the club and the status of the youth academy during that time. I think the max fee for a grade 1 youth academy is £40k per year, between the ages of 12 and 16, so we probably received about £100k for Nfonkeu, as we only received grade 1 academy status 12 months ago, going on the figures below:

    U9 to U11 All Categories £3,000
    U12 to U16 Category 1 £40,000
    U12 to U16 Category 2 £25,000
    U12 to U16 Category 3 £12,500

We would also be entitled to 1% of any future transfer fees paid for Nfonkeu for the rest of his career under the transfer solidarity payment agreement.

I know comments have been made about why take Gallagher on loan from Chelsea, if we are only going to improve him for Chelsea, however by having him for one season here, at his age, would also entitle us to receive between .05 and 1% of any future transfer fees paid for him, so there is a financial benefit to us as well, even if it would not be a vast amount

I got the feeling that there was some understanding reached between the clubs on this one. Bielsa and Pep were involved in it? So Im expecting a bigger chunk on some form of gents agreement. That agreement could have involved the Harrison deal/price. It may also involve the South American kid we have been rumoured to be chasing from City? Last week we paid Wigan only £40k for Sean McGurk because he ran his contract down and walked away. I believe there will be a small reckoning at some stage by the FA whereby Leeds will be expected to give Wigan more cash?

Wonder if Forshaw is going to be fully fit and taking part in then friendlies. The game against Fleetwood will be 2 games of an hour each and wonder what position Forshaw will play, will he play the DM role?

if, and it's still a big IF, he is deemed fit enough to play, I would imagine it would be in one of the two advanced midfield positions, given that we more than enough cover for DM with Koch, Strujik, plus our u23's.

Of course Beilsa may decided that Forshaw is now ideal backup to Meslier :D

Keepers, Kiko out new lad in, makes total sense.
Gallagher, only a loan, but we don't have to shell out a transfer fee and has prem experience and will not expect to walk into the first team. Makes sense.
Signing young lads, even if only 1 or 2 make it, think Kalvin or Jack Clark 10m! Makes sense.
Good work so far in the trannie market.
