At what age and why did you stop playing football? I’m 51 and playing irregularly now (for a couple of reasons) but when I do I’m not effective, so not enjoying it and shagged from low level pains afterwards. So thinking is it time to hang up the Puma Kings?

Covid has probably ended a few players <cheers>

Well I'm 47 and just tried 2 overhead kicks in my sons friends garden. I connected with both but have sore back and shoulder. Oh yes, and I cant run 10 yards anymore without breathing heavy. Other than that...

But have you given up?

I played 5 a side at a decent level until 45, then played after that for 2 more years socially but was finding I was in pain 3 days after. Would be walking like Steptoes Dad on a Monday at work. Gave up then. Miss 5 a side mind, absolutely loved that game - indoors, off the wall, absolutely relentless, wish I could still play. I would say play as long as you can but if the pain spoils it probably time.

Played a charity match, 11 a side, couple of years ago. Some ex pros in it and I turned up on the day to find it was serious. Hadnt played 11 a side in years. I hid myself away at right back but once the game got going I found myself making a run to put a cross in which got cleared and when I saw how far back to my position it was my heart sank. Thankfully we had rolling subs...

Stopped playing in early 00's (Sunday league standard). Never got over my double fracture in 1996.
I’ll not like your post as your injury sounds horrendous. Did you move onto another sport?

Puma Kings are the boots of champions mate. I coach now and still pull mine on before each session, even if they are antiques according to some of the lads I coach. I still get a buzz from football by coaching, and every so often I will even the sides up in a game.

Hung my Puma Kings up 3 year ago at 50, was playing over by then but fractured my knee and called it a day. Had an operation on it to clean up a meniscus tear and 100% now but won’t restart.

Last game I played was about 17 years ago for the board inn at Birtley, really tough 90 minutes, it took me hours to get my breath back, I got home and fell asleep, I realised at that point I was past it

Used to play 3 times a week from 17 to about 31. Stopped when the kids came along and attempted to go back to it when I was 37. Got 3 injuries in the 1st 3 games (including a torn calf) and decided it wasn't for me anymore. Made a one off appearance (in goal) at the age of 43 and ruptured my calcaneofibular ligament in the warm up!

Never stop mate.

I played until I was crippled but wouldn't change a thing ...

... you'll get old, in pain and die no matter what you do.

As the old joke says,

Doctor, "You should stop drinking, flirting and playing sports."

"And I'll live longer?"

"No, it'll just seem like it."

Played police football to a decent standard til my mid forties, 5 a side league's for a few more years but my knees told me my time was up prior to 50.
Played Walking Football (yes I know) until Plantar Fasciitis put an end to that just as covid kicked in and I won't be going back as at 72 I think that's enough. Kept going as long as possible and my midriff is showing signs that I'm missing it.

Top man. Coach is the most biased unbiased person on the pitch especially when they’re making the wrong uns right ;-)
