The world’s oldest competitive cyclist, Robert Marchand, the multiple world record holder centenarian cyclist, died May 22. He was 109. In 1992 Marchand rode from Paris to Moscow. In February 2012, he set a world record in one-hour track cycling in the over-100 age group at 24.250 kilometres. “I’m now waiting for a rival,” he said. Two years later, he made a second attempt at the record and beat his previous time, riding 26.927 kilometres in one hour. On 4 January 2017, he set a world record in one-hour track cycling in the over-105 age group (a category created specifically for Marchand). He rode 22.547 kilometres in one hour at the Vélodrome National near Paris. https://cyclingmagazine.ca/sections...tenarian-cyclist-robert-marchand-dies-at-109/
So sad to hear that. I grew up with Domeso (I think that's how his real name was spelt). We used to knock about in the Avenues area off Chants Ave as kids. RIP.
He was a character. Not what you expect a football manager to be like, more a noisy man drinking in a bar with an irritating voice. However he nearly took us to back to back promotions . We had 2 great seasons under him and he brought in some nice players too. His return in 89 was not good though . RIP Colin xx
I remember a tale from Peter Swan, but it will be a bit sketchy. Swan used to go to pre-season training earlier than the others, because his fitness was never the best. Anyway, Peter turned up at Fer ARK to use the Gym and that and when he entered the dressing room, there was Colin Appleton. Pete asked what the **** are you doing here? Colin replied, I'm a plumber and the plumbing needs plumbing That's dedication. RIP Colin Appleton
82-83 & 83-84 were great seasons to be a City fan, we were in the shadow of RL with a diminished support coming out of receivership yet Don Robinson & Colin Appleton lead us forward, swiftly out of the 4th Division and almost out of the 3rd, set us up for Brian Horton to take us further, great resurgent days, RIP Colin Appleton.
An ex work mate played for Colin Appleton at Scarborough. Great character. I heard some cracking stories. Bit of a one off. RIP
