I’d have zero problems with ten Hag and he’s almost certain to be available for about half the price if we meet Ajax’s comp terms. Though I suppose he’s arguably a bigger risk too seeing as he’s not managed in England before whereas Conte has and right now is probably in his prime too. I’d be genuinely surprised if we do get Conte though - happy surprised that is - but surprised none the less as I think he’d only join with financial assurances being made and not sure we could definitely give that right now.
Yeah I think the same. He’s a bit of a mad man and he generally likes having full control plus a decent amount to spend on his ideal players for his system (he’s almost certain to go 343/ 352). If he’s hired then Levy’s either gonna substantially back him or Conte’s walking before the season starts
343/352 means Doherty will be getting a lot of starts next season It does have to be said that our transfer business last summer seemed to indicate we'd be switching to 3ATB, which we were using last season, but that got dumped when it occurred to the ubermensch that there's no way we could play that due to our midfield's pathological inability to control a game If Conte comes in thinking a pivot including Ndombele could control a game with 3ATB, he's going to need another hair transplant by the end of November
Come to think of it, if we go 343 or 352, how would either look with the current personnel 343 Tanganga Dier Rodon Doherty Lo Celso Hojberg Reguilon Lucas Kane Son 352 Tanganga Dier Rodon Doherty Lo Celso Skipp Hojbjerg Reguilon Kane Son Anyone else immediately hoping to see the latter being used?
I thought the same about Maureen. It was the one positive I could see in his appointment. I thought, why bother signing someone like Maureen with the CV he has and the way in which he built that CV, unless you're prepared to seriously step up and back the man? Did we back him? Lol. Desperately needed a backup ST in his first window. We looked at a bunch of C-list loan options before giving him a winger. Wanted Dias or Skriniar in his second window, we gave him Rodon. What makes us think Conte would get the backing he needs, unless Kane is gone and he'll have that windfall to spend? Honestly if money is tight I'd rather we stopped pretending to be a big club and just signed Potter to get the most out of the little he'll have to work with.
If Aurier leaves this summer, Doherty's the only RWB we have As for Dier, he's a current player and, as a result, the most likely be be in the centre of a back three - or the third big ticket item we transfer list after Ndombele and Sanchez
Three years on his contract says he's going for either hard cash or making up a hell of a lot of the fee in a cash + player swap The exact same thing goes for Sanchez
So how have other historically big clubs who were in a similar position to us when ENIC took over fared in comparison? The five I have in mind are Leeds, Sunderland, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Everton. Three of those were above us in 2001, Leeds by a long way and the others close by us in the table. I've chosen all the clubs in mid table who had won the league more often than us by 2001 and so could have similar aspirations to Tottenham. One of them is now in League 1 and has had 17 managers and I doubt any would be called a success. Three of the others have been in the Championship at some point and have never finished above us since. Everton have been uniformly worse over the whole period apart from a couple of seasons and have no trophies at all. Not one had made a successful managerial appointment since 2001 until Leeds hired Bielsa. Levy getting three good ones out of 13 is world class by comparison.
Most frustrating thing about Doherty for me is that he put in his best performance in a Spurs shirt in the final game against Leicester, defended and got forward nicely. If only he'd played like that earlier, RB wouldn't be such a pressing concern. I think he'll still be here next season as Aurier's most likely to leave and I can't see us shipping out both RBs, so he'll have a second chance and if he can build on that Leicester performance when competing with the potential new RB then he may just do very well under someone like Conte. Big IF though, certainly not gonna jump the gun based on one game.
Not sure why Conte is so highly rated. Look at the players he bought at Chelsea. https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ant...ainer/3517/plus/0/galerie/0?station_id=131925 £350m on 12 players of whom only 3 would get into our current side I think.
He won the league with those players, beating our best ever Prem XI in the process and initially setting the record for most league wins in a season until Pep's City bettered it a couple years later, he done all that with Victor Moses as his first choice RWB too. Then he won the FA Cup the year after albeit having been disappointing in the league. Then he went to Inter and in his second season ended Juve's 9 or 10 year dominance of Serie A. He's one of the very best in the world right now.
He won the league using mostly players who were there before he arrived though. Hardly any signings were a success.
That was a Mourinho blip. They won the League the previous season too. If Conte is going to restructure the Spurs squad then he'll need to spend less money much more effectively. If his job is to add one or two to the current squad and get them playing to full potential then he might be the right guy.
Agreed. That is a pretty shocking list. And there's the rub - at a team like Chelsea, you can piss money away on Batshuayi and Morata and no-one blinks. Do that here and we're financially crippled for 2 years. Kante, Alonso and Giroud the only sensible signings out of that lot. And he deserves minimum credit for Kante and Giroud. And he 'rebuilt' Inter by inflating their wage bill with safe, proven options like Eriksen, Hakimi, Moses, Young and Lukaku. Such little imagination in the market doesn't really inspire confidence he'd successfully rebuild here.
He's going to need to add more than one or two to this squad should he get the job. There's a reason two very good managers have struggled in the last few years at Spurs, Conte will be a third if he isn't given the right tools to work with.
Were they his signings, though? That seems to overlap with Michael Emenalo's time at the club and may explain his departure. Hakimi may have been a safe, proven option, but he's still only 22. Probably a mistake for Real to have let him go.
