Looking at the foul again you can't overturn the on-field decision. It's not a howler because the challenge is reckless. And once you give foul you have to red card him. At the end of the day getting the ball doesn't mean you can't commit a foul. If he hadn't given a foul Vesty would have got away with it. Either way it wouldn't have been a clear and obvious error.
But it was an error. Clear and obvious because it wasn’t four play but a scoring opportunity and it wasn’t.

'Nasty tackle'
Southampton 0-0 Leicester

Karen Carney

Former Arsenal winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

"It is a sloppy touch from Vestegaard. Jamie Vardy is always going to pounce. Vestergaard is late and rash. It was nasty. He got a nick on the ball but it was a nasty tackle onto Vardy's ankle. He has been sent off and rightly so."

<doh>
But we can't criticise her opinion cos she's a woman.

Can’t make the incompetent idiot with the whistle look like he might have made a mistake.

Not a clear enough one to get overturned. Because he dived in a reckless manner it was a foul and there's not enough evidence to overturn the DOGSO part of it. So VAR stayed with the referee's decision.

You’re just defending it because he’s a referee. You said yourself it wasn’t a red but now you’ve reverted to type.

Watching it back, Vestergaard actively and clearly changes the angle of his foot to direct the ball back to McCarthy. No way at all it is a deliberate or reckless attempt to play Vardy's ankles too.

Seeing as Balbuena got sent of for contact on the follow through in an area with no danger whatsoever, it perhaps shouldn't be surprising but it's farcical nonetheless

And that was overturned on appeal, as this one will be.

Balbeunas got rescinded. So if that was overturned, there’s no way this should be a red.

libby is right, we’re going well since the red. We were doing well before, too. Just don’t understand why the referees have to be the centre of attention every single game.

I'm not saying it was a great decision. But my point VAR can't overturn it because it's not a glaring error. This is where we need to hear the conversation that goes on. If he hadn't given a foul VAR wouldn't have gone back to it. It's unfortunate but we haven't been exactly massively screwed over either.
